“Midsummer”

A lively bash on a typical Swedish midsummer night. Good music and and great atmosphere. Daniel, behind the bar, has everything more or less under control! If weather permits, eat outside on the deck overlooking the harbour entrance.

Room Tip: I didn't stay. Went home to my cabin. (But I know the rooms are small and sparsely furnished...

I came here with a friend as part of a package with Inn Travel. We upgraded to a suite overlooking the sea with balcony, fully fitted kitchen etc. Sweden is not cheap and neither is this hotel, the only one on the island, but it is in such a unique position that you forgive the costs and enjoy the views. It is definitely worth upgrading to a suite if you are staying for a few days. To keep costs down, you can walk or cycle to the only supermarket on the island (20 minutes away) and stock up with food - especially good for picnics.

However the hotel does have a superb terrace bar and in the summer there are music concerts. On our last night we had a three course meal including a glass of cava, wine and tea or coffee (as part of the package) and it was superb. The food was not only interesting and full of flavour but presented in a very creative way. It was the best meal I had in Sweden on the whole trip.

To sum up, it would be a great shame to come to the Kosters just for a day trip. It is worth staying for a few nights and walking or cycling all over the South Island and over onto the wild North Island. On both islands, you can find secluded sandy bays and calm crystal water. We went out of season so it was very very quiet. The downside is that not everything is open but if all you want is peace and quiet and the most beautiful surroundings, then go in June and you will not be disappointed.

Room Tip: Go for a sea view suite.

Spent a weekend at Ekenäs hotell Sydkoster. Om Friday we had the lobster meny. This was a very nice dinner with good wine package. On saturday we had the Christmas Tapas. This was not up to our expectations. Overall a nice stay but the service was not the best.

We stayed during the week-end, had a "suite". The main room didn't get warm enough. (December 2012, very cold). It's clean, the suite (I'd call it "apartment") has Swedish style furniture, which makes it a little simple and "cold". The duvets were so thin! The curtains very thin, white and just barely enough to draw. Would have appreciated some "richer" interior.
The pentry kitchen was amazingly well equipped, cutlery, dishes, glasses, kitchen utensils of all sorts, dishwasher, big freezer/fridge, coffemaker, toaster, etc
Wonderful view, though, and a small balcony (which we obviously didn't use it being December..!)

Bring matches and candles and candleholders, maybe some icecube bags,(those u can fill to freeze) and garlic press (if you need these things)

The food in the restaurant: Very good, we were surprised, almost gourmet. But pricey. The wine list quite short and ... bad. We had a 4- course lobster dinner and chose the "wine package" - not impressed. Expensive, but cheap wines. (although they were generous with the wines)

The breakfast was absolutely adequate, sausages, pancakes or semolina pudding (very tasty! Put jam on) 6 and 8 min's eggs, herring, cheeses, muesli, nice jams, etc. etc. Very good bread!

Nice staff.
Wonderful, Christmas-decorated dining room.

BUT the coffee is absolutely AWFUL. Please improve this, Ekenäs-people! A downtrip every time.
Strong and really sour. Typical "Swedish" coffee!

TIP: 2 km's away there's a small, but quite well-assorted grocery, so buy food there and cook if u have "the suite" - to save money. It's a very nice walk thru Koster's almost untouched landscape. Bring wine/booze (and food?) from Strömstad, take it on the ferry. It all depends on how long u're staying.

About Sydkoster island: Paradise on Earth. There are also camping site(s?) and cottages/rooms to rent.

Room Tip: Being on the 1st floor we had to climb up stairs and go thru a heck of a lot of heavy doors, all to...

We stayed here for two nights. We had a twin room with a balcony. The balcony however was in an appauling condition and looked more like something you would expect in a camping hut. With difficulty one might be able to have a sea view. The room was pretty large in bright colours. It had no television and no safety deposit box. Bathroom had a shower no bathtub. The bedlamps had electrical cables that were too short to reach the wall sockets, strange. Beds were a bit too soft. Wifi is said to be free but didnt reach our room. Also in the other areas of the hotel it didnt work during the period we stayed here. There is also a very bad connection for mobile phones right where the hotel is situated so you may have connection problems. The restaurant was large, specially the outdoor part and had a nice view of the sea and harbour. We had a lovely shrimp sandwich for lunch, never tried their dinner. Breakfast was a buffet that was good and included everything that is expected from a hotel of this size. We lacked a lounge or some area where one could sit on a rainy day. Only place with chairs indoors was the bar and it was closed when the bar wasnt open so one couldnt just sit there. The North Koster island with its lighthouses is worth a visit and so is the Koster Gardens situated on the south island. You may rent a bike or take a walk to both these attractions its fully possible. There are no cars driving on the islands only electrical golf cars and mopeds. In not sure I would recommend a stay here. Its a bit too expensive for what you get. The ferry ride from Strömstad to Koster takes aprox 30 minutes. Be sure to buy a return ticket its cheaper and you dont have to return the same day to use it.

Hotel Ekenas has a wonderful location on South Koster, a car-free island off the west coast of Sweden, almost at the Norwegian border and accessible only by ferry. It is near the ferry and on the sea-front. There is an outdoor bar on the terrace with a magnificent view over the sea. We had a suite with a balcony which also had a good view over the sea. Unfortunately it rained on the evening of our stay and we had to eat indoors... the restaurant does not have a view. The problem is that this is the only proper hotel on the island and, having a monopoly, they can charge accordingly. We paid over £500 for a package including 1 night in a suite, breakfast, 3-course dinner, picnic lunch and a boat trip with a crayfish/crab fisherman. Our room was spacious and very comfortable, but at the price I would have expected a bit more: there was no hairdryer, no toiletries, the 2 towels each were rather small, there was a coffee machine but no coffee. These are little niggles and would not have concerned me if we had paid less. Dinner was very pleasant, but was a set meal with no choice. Breakfast was again perfectly good, though not outstanding. The picnic lunch we were given for our boat trip was, however, excellent and very well organised. We were each given a little rucksack and had an excellent beef salad, mineral water, bread, fruit and coffee. The boat trip was fun and we were given crabs to cook back at our rented house on the mainland.
The season here is very short and the hotel clearly survives by organising conferences and offering different packages (On the night of our stay there was a party of elderly people) If it is to thrive as a hotel it needs to either "up its game" or put down its prices.
