Owner description: A FAMILY-FRIENDLY SHOW, where fictional characters bring to life the stories, struggles and triumphs of the Texas Panhandle's early 1800 settlers on stage of the Pioneer Amphitheater; located deep in the heart of the beautiful Palo Duro Canyon State Park. Song and dance abound mixed in with some good ol’ Texas humor, spellbinding lighting, special fire and water effects, and the world famous Dancing Waters of TEXAS and firework finale' make TEXAS a must see!

We absolutely loved the play! And the chuck wagon dinner is well worth the price. The production is professional quality, to say the least, and the staff and actors are all so friendly.

The technical production -- sets, amazing effects with lightning, fires, horses, etc. -- is very, very well done and the natural setting of the canyon in the evening is awe-inspiring. That said, the program is close to 2 1/2 hours including a 15-minute intermission, and the story is just a very cheesy old romance/musical, straight out of the 1950s. It is hard to watch high-kicking "cowboys" dancing and prancing in numbers that last way, way too long and feature over-acting and cornball humor straight out of a high school production.
I mistakenly thought this program was going to be somewhat of a "history of Texas" type presentation. If you go to Manteo, NC, for the longest-running outdoor play of this sort, you get a real history of the area, complete with Sir Walter Raleigh, the Lost Colony of Roanoke, etc.
I feel that we Texans deserve a better program than what is offered here, impressive as it is in the technical sense. The story has a thin tip of the hat to the settling of the Panhandle in the late 19th century, but it's not done in a compelling fashion. Let's look at the target audience: most of the full-house crowd here seemed to be middle-aged to elderly citizens of "middle America." My wife had seen this as a kid and was no longer charmed by the long, dated, corny music/dance interludes that took up half of the night. And, as a red-blooded Texas male, I can say that about the only thing more painful than hearing two dozen thespians sing and chant "Tex-uss" would've been to hear them say "Ok-la-homa." Nuff said.

Traveling back from New Mexico we detoured through Canyon Texas to see the Texas Outdoor musical. It was a great decision as the show was excellent. The outdoor theater in the Palo Duro Canyon is a very scenic place for a show about Texas with the canyon walls as the backdrop. The actors, singers and dancers put on quite a show and should be commended for their entertainment.

I was expecting a low-cost production, but this was quite a show. The backdrop to the stage is the wall of Palo Duro Canyon, and there are frequent ride-bys behind the main stage as well as some scenes on top of the houses on the side of the stage. The actors and actresses are talented, and the choreography is well done, especially considering there are usually 60 dancers and more singers on the sidelines. The history is there, but not always easy to follow. The sound could be improved but that may be due to the outdoors location. We were in the side seats, but had a great view of everything. The tribute to veterans and to the USA added on at the end was amazing - song, dance, fireworks. I am so glad we went!

The outdoor musical, "Texas" , was fun and had a patriotic ending celebrating our veterans with fireworks. I enjoyed seeing the horses being ridden in at the end.
