We started our day at Palo Duro Canyon with a horse ride led by Jesse and Noah. Our teenage boys ages 13-18 were all smiles. We learned about the history of the canyon, red-tailed hawks, lizards, bobcats, and of course their wonderful horses. The boys are still raving about it! Thanks for showing us the Canyon the way it was explored by cowboys of the old west. Our favorite horse name......Yahte-Heaay, of course. =)

In spite of this being a 100+ degree day, our ride with Jesse of the Palo Duro Stables was one of the highlights of our 2 week Colorado and Texas trip to show my boys America. Jesse's trails, on his family land on the edge of the canyon, are varied in terrain, provide some much-needed and effective shade, and some great views and Kodak photo moments. If you are city slickers like my 16 and 14 year olds and me, you feel like you died and went to Western movie heaven. We are virtual beginners on horseback, but were fine riding the well-maintained and well-trained horses (the initial descent to the main part of the trail looks worse than it is, and after that its easy).

We've been on other scenic rides on this trip though, and the intangible that makes this one the winner was riding with Jesse, who is a great guy and really personalized the ride. This is not just some anonymous trail ride, and this isn't just some anonymous trail. Jesse points out various structures built by his father and him over the decades on the trail, including an old Wild West town near the end that is really cool.

Palo Duro Canyon is beautiful, a ton less crowded and visited than the Grand Canyon, but out of the way. If you do make it out there, you owe it to yourself to go riding with Jesse. My boys and. I hope to be able to do it again, someday. Thanks Jesse.
