My wife and I have traveled through the Texas Panhandle several times on out way to somewhere and always dreaded this strech of the interstate...windy, flat, boaring, and crying out loud "when is Texas going to be over". Last time we couldn't stand it any longer and decided to wander off the slab and spend the night in the town of Canyon and visit Palo Duro SP. What a suprise, its the Grand Canyon only you can drive to the bottom of it and explore its beauty and rich history. The other reviews say it all, just do it. The town of Canyon is a nice stopover with a 50's feel with small motels and diners, Don't miss The Wrongway Diner for the "best chicken fried steak in Texas".

As the sun set against the red walls of the canyon you think they are being set ablaze. That's how red they get. great camping area with enough space between you and the next group that you have plenty of privacy. I must remind folks to bring extra water on any hikes, the beauty will draw you further and before you know it, you're under the sun with only a sip or two left... Excellent place to go.

We have camped three times at Palo Duro on our way to Colorado. It is a great stop!! Very nice facilities but be warned if you go in the summer you will melt!!! Plan for extreme heat! Beautiful sunsets and nice evenings.

Driving along the flat plains of northwest Texas, imaging the shock of suddenly driving up to the second largest canyon system in the United States. We spent two nights over the New Years Weekend in the Cow Camp Cabins. Very rustic but we loved it. The scenery is amazing. Lots of hiking and wildlife (coyotes, wild turkeys, flocks of birds). If the night is clear, you will probably see more stars than you have ever seen previously.

For those who enjoy the outdoors, basic cabins or camping, this is definitely a place you should visit. I would plan to spend at least three to four days to settle in and have adequate time to hike and explore.

We stayed 4 nights in the Sorenson cabin. It was a great stay. Good hiking and great weather. The cabin is very quiet and a great view. We only had one mishap. Christmas Eve I was outside in the morning and 3 guys just walked in through the LOCKED fence. It was a little alarming. They finally told us they were there to fix the roof. We told them not to. We were leaving the next day and really didn't want a group of workers interrupting our vacation. Like I said this was the only drawback. If we would have been notified before hand it probably wouldn't have been so alarming. They had a balloon glow one evening. Pretty neat.. Woke up to a white Christmas!!!! . Over all a good trip and would go back again!
