“what a lovely park!”
Reviewed November 21, 2012

and all the volunteers there are quite proud of it. As they should be! We had the good fortune to stay in one of the rim cabins for 2 nights. Chose the Lighthouse. 2 rooms, plus a small full bath. Both rooms are "bedrooms" but the one had a queen bed and the 2nd a small trundle bed. The trundle bed room (the front room) had a small coffee make, fridge and microwave in it. folding table and 2 chairs-- we made use of the small bed as a sofa and set up the table and chairs. It was cute for just the 2 of us. I knew ahead of time that there wasn't a kitchen, so had prepared food ahead of time, froze it and then microwaved it there. Had no desire to travel the 30 minutes to Amarillo for dinner. There is a chracoal grill and picnic table outside, but traveling in November, it was rather dark for cooking at dinner time. Nice little view of the canyon from our cabin and the picnic area. Just darling! Fireplaces in each room, but the fire ban did not allow us to enjoy those. The park itself is beautiful! We hiked a 2 mile hike along the river, part of the CCC trail to the bottom and the best.... the 6 mile round trip hike to the Lighthouse formation. It's a great hike! Not difficult-- aside from rock scrambling the last 1/3 of a mile. There's a trading post in the park that has a little diner. Hours are only from 10:30 am to 4:00 pm. You'll need to fend for yourself when it comes to breakfast and dinner. The cheeseburgers are huge and really tasty! Great for a lunch after hiking those 6 miles!
All in all, it's a really super place!

Palo Duro is a good sized park with nice trails. We were in the Fortress Cliff camp area in November. It was cold and the water was off. The nearest bathroom was a little ways away at Sunflower and the shower area of the rest room was closed for renovation. However if you want a nice restroom/shower area you need to go to the campgrounds that have electricity, they obviously rate much better facilities. We biked/hiked the lighthouse trail and it was nice.

“Nice places to stay”
Reviewed November 15, 2012

We visited Palo Duro Canyon in November. The colors were beautiful; the weather was very warm. We stayed in the Goodnight cabin right on the rim, which was terrific, made by CCC workers of stone but recently updated, with an outdoor table looking into the canyon. The Visitor's Center provides great history, and seeing the longhorns up by the entrance was fun. I wish there were a few more backcountry hikes advertised for more serious hikers.
