The Canyon is a short drive from the Best Western. Even is you just drive through, you can spend a half a day out there. Scenery is great.

The Palo Duro Canyon is a magnificent natural setting. Texas has so much to see and enjoy. Visiting the Canyon was an enjoyable experience on our trip to Lubbock, Texas. We could not have imagined more beautiful natural scenes as we were able to explore at Palo Duro.

It's an amazing a little known state park. Quite a history to it - take the time to read about it before you get there. We have gone twice ...going back the second time to make the 6 mile hike to the Lighthouse. (We may be old, but we ain't pansies!!!) The hike was worth the effort (be sure you heed their warnings to take water on that hike.) We also have gone on the evening nature hike with a guide who told us all about the flora and fauna in the Canyon - made our second visit even better because we knew more about what we were seeing out there. One of the most wonderful things, however, was going to the far east end of the park to watch the sunset ...we were on the rise where the cabins are (gotta REALLY reserve those in advance) above the Cottonwoods in the canyon below....and all the Buzzards were coming in to roost for the evening. They came in like they were squadrons landing on an aircraft carrier. ("This is Buzzard 452 coming in for tree 6, I say tree 6." "Roger 452; cleared for landing.) And as the sun began to dip below the canyon wall, the sunlight lit the Cottonwood leaves up in gold as they waved in the gentle wind of the evening - glittering and shining ...it was one of the most beautiful sights I have ever seen.

The Very Best Outdoor Production "Texas" is performed in the summer months June - August. The backdrop and stage are the beautiful canyons. Spectacular show with a great story, dancing, singing, fireworks, and a wonderful catered barbeque dinner. Also hiking, camping, and picnics in the awesome canyons of the Texas Panhandle.

We've been here twice, but for a 20K race both times, so I don't know how crowded it normally is. Stunningly beautiful vistas, unique canyon beauty. Trails are not for the timid.
