Central Italy (30 miles south of Bologna) has a new luxury Hotel, Spa and Conference Center called Palazzo di Varignana where my wife and I spent the first week of October (2013). We recommend it highly and unequivocally for a couples getaway. It's a dream come true for a Bologna entrepreneur who bought and restored the 400-year-old Palazzo once occupied by the Germans for it's breathtaking and advantageous view of the valley and Bologna. The Palazzo houses a fine dining restaurant, original chapel and state of the art meeting rooms. It is meeting planner's ideal arrangement.

But for a couples' getaway the sleeping rooms, spa and fascinating side trips were the attraction to us. We occupied a two-room suite with a huge bathroom and all amenities. All rooms have balconies or patios that look out over the rural rolling countryside. We slept-in and lunch was our first meal at the high quality pool/deck and lobby restaurant where we enjoyed dinner nightly. All personnel from front desk to maids were very accommodating. All of the hotel room buildings are connected by underground hallways to the lobby, restaurant and spa! First class treatment. The Region offers interesting 2 to 4 hour side trips into the countryside or over to either coast. We enjoyed walking over to the tiny community of Varignana and having lunch with the locals. The hotel picked us up at Bologna Train Station and we rented the car after a couple days at the Spa.

The Spa facilities are first class. In addition to the infinity pool outside, there is a huge temperature controlled pool for wading in the Spa. It features whirlpool chairs and lounges in the water. After time in the sauna and steam rooms a first class "quiet relaxing" room awaits. The Spa treatments offered were extensive and we can vouch for the quality of the massage. The fitness room is integrated with the Spa.

We made the important observation of their commitment to the environment. It is truly impressive how all the new construction takes advantage of building unobtrusively into the side of the natural hills to assure that nothing competes visually with the Palazzo. The landscaping is now and will be in the future, a complement to the project. We'll be back!

Room Tip: Rooms overlooking the scenic countryside

My wife and our 3 daughters (all over 21) had a wonderful vacation at Palazzo di Varignana. The rooms, spa, workout room, outdoor & indoor pools and food were all 5 stars. The staff was very friendly, very helpful, and all spoke English. Bologna and the city of Dozza are all nearby, plus they offer free bikes at the resort which we used in the mornings as a workout. You cannot go wrong with this resort, it will exceed your expectations!
