Nice family friendly tour outside of Houston. Tour is just long enough that it will keep kids interested and the generous scoop of ice cream puts a smile on everyone's face!

I was truly surprised at the amount of people waiting to go on the tour. We got there about 2:00 and our tour started at 2:40. We went outside to look around and take some pictures since cameras weren't allowed inside. It was hot outside and inside the waiting area was pretty hot too. There were a lot of people inside so air circulation was not felt. We used brochures to fan ourselves. The tour was pretty interesting. There was about 40-50 people in our group. It was interesting to see the process. At the end you got a dish of ice cream. We were happy we went but I think this is a one time experience.

We went on a Friday and they had tours every 15 mins. We had to wait 30 mins for ours. We paid an extra $1 to have icecream before the tour started and was well worth it to not have to wait. The operation was very interesting and was smaller than I anticipated - just 1-3 people per line.

I've loved Blue Bell Ice Cream for many many years and nothing is better then a pilgrimage to the Promised Land in Brenham. The tour is well done and the folks on the floor take a moment out of their busy day to wave a smile so they appear to love their jobs but hey, who wouldn't? You are making the best ice cream on the planet! You get a free bowl of ice cream at the end and you can even try new products that are just about to come out, I had Made in the Shade, excellent. They also have a nice gift shop so you can buy some cool Blue Bell items for yourself and as gifts.

Brenham is about a 1-1/2 to 2 hr drive from the Austin area, and is a fun day trip. We took the tour, which only lasts about 40 minutes, and enjoyed looking through the large viewing windows at the various processes going on in the areas below--pasteurizing, mixing, adding flavorings, assembly line for filling cartons, watching ice cream sandwiches being made, etc. Our tour guide Matt was a wealth of information, including the facts that vanilla is still #1, and that Blue Bell is #3 in sales, even though only in 19 (?) states. And their slogan ("we eat all we can, and sell the rest") is really true--employees get as much free ice cream as they want in the break room!
