“Spectacular!”
Reviewed August 12, 2013

Gaia Riverlodge was fantastic! My husband and I spent 3 nights here after visiting Matachica on Ambergris Caye (Gaia's sister resort). The resort is breathtaking and the staff is so welcoming and friendly. The views of the river and waterfall were beautiful to look at and listen to. We had plenty of relaxation by the river as well as fun exploring Mayan ruins and caves (We loved the ATM cave tour & Caracol ruins!). We would love to return one day!

The hotel grounds are immaculate and the staff could not be more attentive. The cabins overlooking the falls are well worth the price. Food and drinks at the hotel were consistently excellent. Our tour guides arranged by the hotel were knowledgeable and helpful. We plan to return to this hotel again because only four nights are not enough. Truly an unforgettable experience.

Room Tip: For the best experience, book a bungalow overlooking the waterfalls.

It was our first time in Central America and we had the luck and pleasure of staying 3 days at Gaia and 6 at Matachica. For myself, the highlight of our vacation to Belize was the Gaia Riverlodge. The grounds themselves are beautiful and surreal, the rooms are stunning as well. However for me it was the staff and other guests that made this stay so wonderful. Nigel, Javier, Oswald, Earnest, Lucely, Sylvia and Troy made everyone feel like rock stars when staying there. Late nights at the bar just talking and laughing with each other after a long day of adventures made it feel like long lost friends rather than a staunch professional establishment (not implying that they are not extremely professional, that couldn't be further from the truth.)

The guide, Calbert, who took us to the ruins as well as Barton's cave was extremely knowledgable about the environment. From the Mayans to the various plants and animals in the rainforest, we learned a lot and had a great time doing it.

The food was very fairly priced and extremely delicious. I think I sustained for at least a day on nothing other than Troy's banana bread. The variety of the menu allows you to have different options each night, though there is a few dishes I found myself returning to. Mainly the steak which was incredible.

I could honestly go on for days about the atmosphere and wonderful staff that make Gaia what it is, but no one reads the long reviews. I would just like to say thank you again to the staff of Gaia for making such a wonderful vacation for myself and Brittany.

THANK YOU!

Scott and Brittany.

It may take a long and bumpy ride to reach Gaia, but it's worth it. Javier checked us into our waterfall view room and showed us the baby birds nesting outside. The grounds are gorgeous and well-maintained. Falling asleep at night to the sound of the falls was incredible. We didn't have any mosquitos in our room, just a ton of moths to remind you that you are in nature and not Disney. Everyone will call you by name - from Oswald, the bartender who makes a great drink called the Gaia Kiss, to the waitstaff at dinner. Food is good and decently priced. We had the sirloin and BBQ pork chop and a shrimp ceviche. Unfortunately, they were out of lobster. (We ventured to Blancaneaux another night and were disappointed. Gaia is much nicer all around.) The included breakfast is a little boring (go with the banana bread over the cinnamon roll). But the omelet and Mayan option were both good. We shared one included and one egg breakfast, which worked well. Don't miss the nature trail that takes you through the jungle to the falls, but cover yourself in bug spray. We only arranged one tour, which was the ATM Cave (amazing!), and couldn't be done solely through hotel staff, but we heard that the hotel tours were very well done. Highly recommend this place, just make sure you're OK with long rides into and out of the hotel in considering your plans. Build in some time to relax and enjoy the beauty of the surroundings. Thanks to Nigel as well!

Gaia River Lodge was a three hour drive away from the Belize City International Airport. Even though it is only 115 km! There is an hour drive down a very bumpy dirt word, but it is well worth the drive.
We arrived to by far the friendliest staff I have ever come across. We were greeted with a tour of the grounds that included how and what was used to build the beautiful lobby, restaurant and bar as well as our personal cabana. The restaurant offered three different seating options: a screened indoors, a porch with fans and a lower deck.
All three with the most stunning views of Five Sisters Falls. 300 steps or a cozy "elevator" takes you down to the clear, cool water. Situated next the falls were chairs and hammocks covered by a thatched roofs. It was so calming and peaceful. A short little climb over the rocks would take you to a second pool as well.

Our room looked out over the pinetree forest. It was immaculately clean, and I felt like I could have slept in their cozy bed for days! Our room was cleaned daily, and fresh towels folded to look like birds, elephants and hearts were left.

At dinner each night, we were greeted by the entire staff and received top notch service. The food was excellent. Nothing but the most fresh ingredients and prepared to perfection. I was introduced to fried jacks there, which were heavenly. Freshly squeezed juice accompanied our breakfast each morning or could be tasted in one of their delightful cocktails. Lunch each day was packed for us to take on our excursions and included fresh fruit (watermelon, papaya, pineapple and mango) as well as homemade salsa and chips, delicious sandwiches on homemade bread or vegetables and pasta. Seriously the most impressive packed lunch I have ever had.

The manager would come visit us at dinner each night and tell us about our next days excursions. Calbert, our awesome guide each day was so knowledgeable and had such a great sense of humor! We visited Mayan ruins, went cave canoeing, zip lining and swimming in a river just to name a few. As we visited all of these places, Calbert identified trees and plants and explained and how and what they were used for. He taught us about Mayan traditions and cultures and about the geography and history of his country. I never imagined walking away from this vacation having learned so much.

I can't say enough how amazing the staff here was. They truly are happy to be there and happy to share Belize with us.

What a spectacular place to stay! The staff went out of their way to help with whatever we needed and could not have been more friendly. The grounds are beautiful and will make you feel so relaxed! Make sure you go to Big Rock and check out the waterfall. If you ask staff to go with you they will be happy to bring you out there and even play in the waterfall.
