My husband and I recently returned from Hidden Valley Inn. We had an exceptional vacation there. We decided to take a private plane (Javiers) from Belize City to the resort which is well-worth it as it is only 1/2 hour away by plane.
The staff were wonderful: courteous, helpful and friendly. The food was good with some local dishes, but not oustanding. They had a full bar service every night where all the visitors to the Inn got together in the evenings before dinner to exchange stories. We met some very nice people staying there!
The hiking trails were outstanding: perfectly natural, not a scrap of garbage and not a human being in sight. We are looking forward to returning to see the new escarpment trail that is being built to bring tourists down to an area that hasn't seen human beings in 1500 years!
Don't miss the cascades trail (through dozens of waterfalls) and be sure to visit Secret Pools and Falls for a special treat and enjoy your packed lunch there.
We needed to use the radios for pickup on our longest hiking trail as we lost track of time and would have returned back in the dark, if they didn't come to pick us up! (very handy to have that service out in the forest)
We also tried out the mountain bikes and canoed in the local lake. The excursion to the Mayan ruins was also fun and educational. (there is a military escort for the last hour due to a problem years ago with some local thugs trying to rob the tourists.. but no problems now)
The room was wonderful and kept very clean. We really enjoyed the fireplace at night.
The only negative (which was expected) was that there are certainly biting blackfly-like bugs. (no mosquitoes). Covering up and some deet does the trick, though.
Visiting the jungle; however, is not for the squeamish who can't handle some not-so-welcome visitors. For instance, a scorpion got into our room that my husband speared with a walking stick (nothing can get under your bed, though). A couple guests said they also saw a viper on one of their hiking trails, but we didn't see any snakes at all. Common sense... staying out of these critters way is a good idea. I did get a few bites from some fire ants.. unpleasant, but they didn't leave any lasting welts.
The HVI certainly exceeded our expectations and we will definitely be back in the future, hopefully with friends to enjoy the pristine jungle & forest areas again.

We, 2 couples, spent 15-18 July 2008 at this wonderful mountain lodge in Belize. Elmer confirmed our airport pickup prior to our departure and we were met on time by Rick the Inn's guide. After about a 2.5 hour ride we received a gracious welcome by Elmer who greeted us by name, gave us cold moist towels and iced lemon grass tea for refreshment. Elmer explained the workings of the Inn and then we were escorted to our beautiful cottage which was spacious, comfortable and attractively furnished. During our stay we toured the Mayan Ruins at Caracol, canoed through caves with Mayan artifacts, swam in a natural pool by Hidden Valley Falls and spotted an orange breasted Falcon at King Vulture Falls. All of these excursions were led by Rick who is exceptionally knowledgeable and the most congenial of guides. We spent most of four days with Rick and he's the best! Meals and service at the Inn were great. The dining room was elegant, but not pretentious. The Inn grows and serves its own organic coffee which is marvelous. We also enjoyed gathering in the bar area before dinner to share our day's experiences with fellow travelers. Bruce the bartender took very good care of us. The Inn is ably managed by Beverly and Flavion Daguise. Their attention to detail is obvious and noteworthy as is the warm hospitality that every guest feels during their stay. Our principal reason for our travel to Belize was a sailing charter out of Placencia. Although we had a good week at sea, our most memorable experience in Belize was our stay at and excursions from the Hidden Valley Inn. We recommend it most highly and we will return.

We came to this place after being recommended by Seaside Cabanas on Caye Caulker where we had stayed on the first week of our time in Belize. We were not disappointed. The place is stunning, staff are wonderful.
Remote waterfalls and great food, make this a must stay when you are thinking of a jungle stay in Belize.

We stayed at Hidden Valley as a two part vacation with the first 4 nights here and the second four at San Pedro. The Resort, Staff, & Food are excellent! We would highly recommend taking the time to stay with Hidden Valley. All of the waterfalls on the property are gorgeous, and when we were hiking we felt as though we were the only ones there.

We did the Tekal tour in Guatemala but from what I hear you can enjoy Characol just as much without the extra two hours each way in a car. But it was an adventure to cross into Guatemala and get some of the traditional Guatemalan beer. We also did the cave canoe trip and butterfly farm package. Both were interesting. They have so many trails with wildlife that is was just a great time. They helped us schedule a hike and picked us up and dropped us off so that we could see as much of the property in the time we had. We spent some time in the Devil's fall top pool which was great with the ladder access.

The room and dinners were great. We didn't have a bad meal the whole time. Highly recommend and would return here in a heart beat.

We stayed at Hidden Valley for 4 nights. Even before we got there, Elmer and Misael were so responsive to all of our questions through e-mail. We flew in to their private airstrip (arranged by the inn), saving us lots of travel time and hours of driving over extremely bumpy roads. We loved the inn-- clean and comfortable room, great food, nice pool, well manicured grounds, unbelievable hiking trails and an outstanding staff. All of the staff were so pleasant and professional. The Cayo is a great area to explore-- don't miss the ATM tour, and a trip to Caracol with Rick! Rick was the most knowledgeable and engaging tour guide we've ever had. We thoroughly enjoyed hiking the well-maintained and marked trails, the many waterfalls with great swimming, and the two-way radio that enabled us to call for a pick-up after a long, tiring hike!

This place is amazing. It was the cheapest hotel we stayed in during our honeymoon (we also stayed at Chaa Creek and Victoria House) but it was fantastic. There are 12 rooms here and 90 miles of hiking trails. We stayed for 4 nights and had a totally different experience every day without ever leaving the property. It really is a unique place.
We hiked to Manakin Falls the first day (boring hike along the service road, but the destination is so worth it!) and also to the Lake Lolly Folly which was good fun. On the second day we got dropped off by Devils Falls and Mermaid pool which is stunning and then we walked to Butterfly falls (breathtaking), stopped for a quick swin and arrived at Secret falls to find our dinner there waiting for us. We stayed there 3 hours (we even slept in the hammock) and then hiked back to the hotel via the cascade trail which is a must! It is so much fun climbing up ladders and over treetrunk bridges, with the backdrop of cascades and river side trails.
The third day we rented Orchid Falls for the day -This is an absolute must if you are staying at the property - this was one of the highlights of the honeymoon. A private cabana awaits next to a gorgeous waterfall. A champagne lunch is set up in the cabana, as are two hammocks - perfect for relaxation. There are rubber rings waiting for fun in the waterfall pool and even a flushing toilet!!!!
The hotel itself is cute. It was the least luxurious of the accommodations we stayed in (I would recommend they get new towels), but its still of a high enough standard. We used the pool most nights and watched the hummingbirds sipping nectar as we sipped a cocktail in the hot tub. The food was good - especially the soups! The service at the hotel is amazing! We felt like we were their primary concern and they designed the walks so we wouldnt bump into anyone along the way. In fact the service here was much better than at the other two more expensive hotels we stayed at.
They provide oil in the bathrooms which is useful as an insect repellant -you do need to put it on during the day, but its not required at night. There are no mosquitos at all there.
We didnt do any trips from here (we did them with our other hotels) but they were on offer, and you could also use bikes (which again, we didnt get round to).
We stayed at Chaa Creek after and that was a completely different experience (also great), I would recommend staying at a jungle lodge, and also here in the mountain pine ridge area.
I didnt want to leave! I would definatley return to this hotel as it represents amazing value and an unforgettable, unique experience.
Thank you Hidden Valley Inn!

We stayed at Hidden Valley as part of our Honeymoon. The Resort, Staff, & Food are excellent!!! We would highly recommend taking the time to stay with Hidden Valley. All of the waterfalls on the property are georgous, and when we were hiking we didn't run into any other couples. They really work to make it feel like you are their top priority and anticipate what you might need/want!

We also enjoyed that the resort is spring fed. It was like taking a shower in an unlimited supply of evian....

We did the Caracol/Rio Frio tour with Rick as our guide. Rick is awesome - he provided an insightful, informative, and funny tour. We really appreciated how he presented the various buildings on the site so that it made sense and we only saw other tour groups briefly. We really felt like we had Caracol to ourselves.
We also booked secret pools and falls for an afternoon/day. They helped us schedule a hike (and picked us up and dropped us off - Thanks Freddy!) so that we could see as much of the property in the time we had and be able to spend the afternoon at our "private" waterfall. The lunch they set out was amazing!! (I had just figured we would find sandwhiches on paper plates but they actually took the time/energy to provide real plates, silverware, glasses & champagne glasses as well as linen napkins and the meal was just amazing. I especially enjoyed the cucumber/feta salad and the carmel& chocolate based dessert).

The room and 3 course dinners were great and we loved the continental/hot breakfast!

P.s. They also give you a radio so if you need something (e.g. a drink or get tired of hiking) they will come help you!
