We were somewhat unsure about this place because it is an old country house and out in the sticks. It was well worth the drive! Really a pretty drive!
We got the chicken Fredericksburg which is one of the most popular dishes. I see now why it is! Great peach strudel also.

Camping near by saw the sign about steak night on wednesday and missing it so made a reservation on Friday evtening @5:30 pm. Food was wonderful, waitress knew all the specials and knew what they were. Unfortunately the hummingbird cake, peach cobbler were sold out but still on the board. I would love to have had more than one meal. Will return next time I get to San Antonio....

It's in the middle of nowhere, but well worth the effort to fine. Great specials with some excellant German standards. Good wine list for being in the country setting. Nice outdoor patio for a late dinner. Careful of the deer when going home in the dark

If you want a quintessential Texas roadside dining experience in the Hill Country, it's worth the weekend drive to this place. But, come relaxed, in no hurry and let all expectations go. While the food can be exceptional, it can sometimes be quite disappointing, extremely slow and a somewhat expensive mistake. If you don't mind a dog wandering around the dining room, and screened porches with lots of natural Texas personality and heat, this place can make a memory. We stopped and had pie one afternoon. No one was there. Service took 30 minutes, coffee refills were slow, but the ambiance leant itself to a great conversation in spite of the negatives. It's like a step back in time. It's a unique place.

I've met the owner, and she's a passionate chef. When she's on, her food is incredible and well worth the hit-or-miss hesitancy. When off, well, plan another trip and see if the magic has returned.

Took my parents in law as they have travelled this area but never stopped at the Welfare Cafe.
Sat outside in nice ambiance and ordered drinks, then food. Almost an hour to get food. There was no explanation, though the waitress seemed as if she wanted to say something then chose not to.
Food was hot and flavorful.
Restaurant was not really busy on a Sunday evening so not sure what caused the delay. A word of explanation would have been appreciated.
