Charming and delish. Don't miss! Old 1800's grocery and post office turned into a restaurant. Bathrooms were fancy outhouses! Very fun. Very Texas. A little off the beaten path from San Antonio.

“Great Experience”
Reviewed October 21, 2013

We decided to try this little gem on a recent day trip and am so glad we did! Everything was wonderful, great selection of both flavorful and healthy items to suit a wide variety of tastes. The interior of the café is worth a visit in itself as it's like stepping back into time. The food however is done with great care and skill, not to be undermined by it's setting.

“Excellent Food for Middle of Nowhere”
Reviewed October 13, 2013

We ate here yesterday and thoroughly enjoyed our food. The goat cheese with crostinis was fabulous, as were the kraut balls. The blue plate special was good and the crab cakes were delish.
No complaints, except we arrived a bit after the lunch crowd and service was a little slow, but we did not mind since the food was good and we were in no hurry.

“Just yummy!”
Reviewed September 3, 2013

What a wonderful excursion my husband and I had exploring the Hill Country in Texas and finally eating at the Welfare Cafe. So many have recommended this to us yet we never had the time. The restaurant is in the original Post Office of Welfare, Texas and the owners maintained the property as authentic as possible from the original building. Food, very good, and different from what I have experienced. Definitely a wonderful place for lunch - we actually split our meal as the serving was very large.
