Steve Artale, Hungry Horse owner, generously contributes to Kendall County and many nonprofits, groups, and benefits. Look for his name listed as a supporter for many fundraising events. You will see it often! I think he is a fine person, and I want support his business, but unfortunately I just don't care for the Hungry Horse. The portions are large, but generally very mediocre in flavor. There is nothing that makes me want to return. Standard Texas menu items like Chicken Fried Steak is better on I-10. Other fried offerings have been pretty greasy. Special salads have been goopy with odd combinations or poor prep. Most food seems like frozen or pre-packaged, and not house-made.Counter service is hit or miss in the nice category. Sometimes it seems like you are bothering them. I hope they have changed the coffee by now, if not, Hungry Horse serves Egberts - the most heinous, instant, brown-flavored water ever encountered. I poured over $4 of "coffee" on the ground. We don't have many "family home-cooking restaurants" in Boerne, and HH is certainly busy at lunch. I applaud the owner's community spirit, but wish his restaurant matched his generosity.
