Great food at a great price. Staff is friendly, helpful and wants to help you relax and have a good time. Like them on Facebook and get a daily special. Wednesdays are chicken and dumpling day, plan to make it then as they are the best!!

This place has the best desserts, anywhere! And they're made right there, not the frozen junk from some places. Brownie bottom turtle cheesecake is my favorite treat--sometimes I skip lunch, just to eat dessert. :) The view of the courthouse is an added bonus.

“The charm draws you in”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 28, 2013

Returning to San Antonio from an event in Waco over the weekend, we decided to take the back roads as much as we could. It was almost past lunch-time when we drove around the historic courthouse square in Belton. We often find that small-town Texas courthouse squares have charming restaurants mostly frequented by the locals. Such was the case with the Sarsaparilla Saloon & Cafe.

Built in the mid-1800's first as a mercantile store, the entire block in which it is housed burned to the ground in 1879. The only thing left standing were the limestone rock walls. It was rebuilt in 1881, using the limestone walls as the unifying structure. In addition to serving as a mercantile store, the building has operated among other things as a drug store, soda fountain, appliance store and German restaurant. Tile floors dating back to the 1940's compliment the pressed tin ceiling. The original smoke-stained limestone walls are adorned with 1800-era tools, branding irons and shotguns. Many items were donated to the owner by her former teachers.

Owner, Tammy Wilson, opened the restaurant in 2010, and shared the above bit of history with me. She grew up in Belton and has a keen interest in revitalizing the historic courthouse square. The Sarsaparilla is open only Monday-Friday for lunch. It has a simple menu of sandwiches, soups, chili and on Wednesdays the ever-popular Chicken n Dumplings. "I write the menu on the chalk board and when things sell out, we erase it; so is the case with the Chicken n Dumplings."

Although the Sarsaparilla looks like a saloon, it serves no alcohol, rather serving specialty sodas from Sioux City bottling: Prickley Pear, Orange Cream, Cream Soda, and both diet and regular Sarsaparilla. ($1.99 each) Sandwiches are $3.99. Soup and a whole sandwich $6.99, and Chicken n Dumplings $6.99. Iced tea and coffee are also options.

You would spend the same amount at a fast-food chain for lunch, but you would miss the wholesome food and charming atmosphere that takes you back in time.
