“First Timers to the Mill”
Reviewed November 23, 2011

Recently a friend (Cary Ledford) and I (Gerald LeBlanc) took a trip to Tennessee and the Ledford Mill was one of the places we planned on staying but ended up being a destination. We thought the "Loft Room" was so comfortable being furnished with antiques, and we are planning a return trip to the mill for several days our next time. We hope to get the loft room again. John & Mildred Spear were wonderful and "Tom" the cat was a delight as well. John explained all aspects of the mill to us and showed us around the whole mill and Mildred prepared us a truly dleicious country breakfast the following morning. We shared coffee with some other guests that was there on a second or third trip themselves.

Room Tip: These people make you feel like you are family and the sound of the waterfall is soothing...

We have come to love Bed & Breakfasts. This one is great. Bulit in 1884 and on the National Register of Historic Places and on the Tennessee Heritage Trail, you get the charm of the Mill, the gracious hospitality of John & Mildred Spear, and wonderful breakfasts! All three rooms are furnished with antiques. The Loft Room has a clawfoot tub and a modern shower. It also has a "Grandma Room" with two twin beds. The Loft Room balcony overlooks a waterfall. The Falls Room.opens onto the garden and the falls. The Creek Room has a dbl bed and a gas fireplace. The main floor houses the Breakfast Room and the antique store. All the rooms have central heat and air (with fireplace or electric heat for winter). The Mill pond has large "pet" trout, bass and carp. Only a short drive to Shelbyville and Tullahoma with their restaurants. Jack Daniels and George Dickel distillaries are nearby for day trips. Wonderful place for relaxing amd romance! Our 9 yearold granddaughter loved it!

Room Tip: Loft room is quieter when door to balcony is closed. Falls and Creek rooms have the soothing waterfa...

We spent one night here on a road trip. The mill is very secluded but near the Jack Daniel's distillery (a fun tour if you're in the area). The property is beautiful and definitely unique. There are three rooms in the old mill building along with a common eating area and antiques shop. We stayed in the Creek Room on the lower floor. It was good-sized and had a private entrance, full bathroom, TV/VCR, and a mini fridge. One of the walls is a very old rock wall. Unfortunately, the room was musty (probably due to that wall) and really triggered my husband's allergies, which are usually mild. If you are sensitive to dust or mold you should probably choose a different room. Cleanliness wasn't quite what we are accustomed to at a B&B. The room was generally tidy, needed vacuuming and had quite a few cobwebs. The bedsheets were freshly washed but had some prominent stains, and the mattress seemed worn.

John and Mildred are lovely hosts and are definitely naturals at hospitality. They were very accommodating of our late arrival and let each guest choose their own preferred breakfast time. The common area is stocked with snacks, beverages, and a huge movie collection that guests are free to visit any time day or night. We're glad we visited at this unique place, but we expected things to be just a little more polished around the corners.

Room Tip: Don't choose the Creek Room if you have any allergies or asthma that could be triggered by dust...

I'm a Marriott snob and always try to stay at their hotels to keep my elite status, so when we decided to do the Whiskey trail in TN, we were outside my 'comfort zone'...But as soon as I saw that this place backed up to a waterfall, we were sold! It is choke full of antique'y charm--the main floor is an antique store/'museum' of the mill's history and kitchen...and the gracious hosts, John and Mildred, tell us to help ourselves to anything in the kitchen (peach bundt cake, fresh baked cookies, ice cream, popcorn, etc)...you will not be bored at this place. I spent hours just looking at the mill's architecture and antiques, reading thru all the books on the area, looking at all the movie titles (both vhs and dvd) and playing board games with the hubby...best part of the night was sitting out by the falls with a glass of wine and cigar and letting the world slip away from us...Tom Cruise, the cat, is just as friendly as his owners...he'll hop right up on your lap and join you on your walk around the property...I don't even like cats, but I fell in love with this one!

We stayed in the falls room, which has a private entrance off the side of the mill and leads straight out to the benches to sit by the waterfalls. The large room has a queen bed, tv, fireplace and an interesting rock wall (that is actually the side of the road that lies above the room). Its bathroom is divided by the mill's original equipment...there is nothing cookie-cutter about this place and the owners have done a fabulous job of bringing a unique southern charm to every aspect of the rooms and experience...they even make their own soap and shampoo!

The next morning, John and Mildred, had the most awesome breakfast waiting for us--baked apple with oatmeal (full of honey and fruits--it had the consistency of a thick cake batter and was so yummy!), ham, and bagels...we spent a few hours just chatting with them and sharing our travel stories...they were made to run a bnb, even though they'll tell you that it was never in their plans...and that John actually bought the place as a surprise to Mildred....funny how life works itself out sometimes! We didnt' want to leave, but we'll definitely be back!

Room Tip: book here if you want to GET AWAY...no tv, no internet, no cell phone reception!

I've been to this B&B four times in the last few years, staying in two of their three rooms.

The top floor is a very large suite, great room, tv room and plenty of space. I sat on the balcony smoking a cigar on the cool fall night.

The bottom floor is my favorite with water running through it and a bear claw bathtub..

The middle floor is the small gift shop and area where breakfast is served.

It's one of those places where you sleep like a baby, hear nature and just want to stay for a week or two.

Clean rooms, great price, great location. A great weakened getaway, romantic escape, etc..

Guys.. The innkeepers have a photo album. My second trip there was with a different date than my first trip there. Of course she looked through the photo albums and saw my previous visit... I opted out of the picture on the third and fourth visit...

My husband and I wanted to get away from Nashville for a night. From the moment we arrived at Ledford Mills, we felt welcome, relaxed and at peace. The nearby waterfall provides a melodic backdrop to the quaint, antique-filled Mill. John and Mildred are the perfect hosts, and Mildred cooks a decadent breakfast. We'll definitely be back!

This was our second time and we will be going back next year. Mildred and John are what make the place so wonderful. They treated us like family, only better! Mildred served a different fabulous gourmet breakfast every one of the nine days we were there, John made the best coffee and had maps for anywhere we wanted to go. We've been in all the rooms, we like the Falls room the best because of the door leading out to the private garden area and being able to see the big waterfall while laying in bed. Everything personal was clean and tidy. The less than perfect score on cleanliness is just due to the rustic nature of the place.
