Refuge is the perfect cabin in the mountains retreat. It is on a very private road and designed for total privacy even on the outside balcony deck. Refuge has everything you need for a retreat from the world and even more comforts than home. Huge pillowtop comfy bed, fabulous jacuzzi, fireplace, CD system for great music, everything needed to truly relax. Also if you want to watch TV, movies, cook in the totally furnished kitchen and just hibernate and indulge yourself in doing nothing but hanging out together....this is the place. My husband and I came after a very stressful season of life for a quiet time together to relax and spend time doing nothing. We arrived just as Hurricane Sandy and the cold front met over the Smokies and were blessed to be able to get an extra night at Refuge to begin our trip (instead of our planned tent camping before coming to Refuge)
Billie is so accomodating and furnishes everything you could want or need, (including candles all around the cabin and jacuzzi for a romantic setting). You can enjoy the moutains just looking out the floor to ceiling windows or going out on the deck. The view is beautiful and sitting out on the deck to drink coffee and be restored by God's creation was a huge blessing and encouragement to us. We enjoyed the fire pit out front by building a fire and making smores and having a "mini camping" experience with the ability to go back inside the warm cabin when we finished, (didn't miss the tent camping). We ate out in Townsend but also enjoyed cooking (even furnished with a crock pot to be cooking dinner for you while you are out enjoying the Smokies).
Townsend is definately the "quiet side of the mountain" and the best place to stay in the Smokies if you want a retreat. The town is full of wonderful restaurants, shops and warm, welcoming people. We hiked in the Great Smoky Mountain National Park of course, and enjoyed not only beautiful fall foliage but due to the cold front/hurricane collision we enjoyed SNOW !! We were able to hike up into the snow in the Smokies and also to go to Newfound Gap when it reopened to enjoy more snow.
Four nights at Refuge was not enough...we did not want to go home. My only hesitation about recommending Refuge is that I don't want to let out the secret of such a wonderful place at such an affordable price because WE want to come back every year !!
