“Lovely location view of mountains”
Reviewed December 6, 2011

Very welcoming host, rooms are spacious and clean with good free wifi and big parking spaces. Location is excellent especially for cases cove. It is at the far end of Townsend which makes it quieter as there is less passing traffic. Welcome basket of muffins/ pastries coffee and cheese snacks a nice touch. Townsend is a nice base for exploring the smoky mountains as it has not been ruined by mcdonalds, KFC and other similars like nearby gatlingburg and Cherokee. Would totally recommend this place

The price was good & the room was average. The only thing I didn't like was that they didn't have coffee or breakfast until 7 a.m. If you want to see the "smoke" in the Great Smokey Mountains, you need to be at the top of the mountains by 7 a.m.

Just got done staying three days at Gateway. I always go back when I am in the area.It is by far the cleanest place you will ever find. The owners treat all the guests like family. The rooms are a good size and very comfortable. The sheets and towels are a good quality and the goodie basket is a nice touch. If you are looking for a great place to stay and CLEAN here it is .I have talked to several guests and it seems there are alot of repeat customers. The word is out.

I have just returned from the Smokies where I stayed at the Townsend Gateway Inn. This was my second stay at the Inn and both times it was great! It was very clean and quiet, the host/owner is kind and hospitable, it was clean, the basket of goodies in the room was a nice touch, and did I say...it was CLEAN! It is an older motel but has been remodeled and is THE BEST place to stay in Townsend. I plan to return again and again!

Yes this place feels like a home. The people are friendly, helpful, and make you feel at ease and the dog is a bonus treat. She makes you feel like you are her people too. This was a quiet place and I love to stay in Townsend due to the peace and low traffic (less people). The room was recently remodeled and it is simply decorated in a country style and is lovely. They have food stocked in a basket for you to eat and make sure that you have plenty. Plus coffee if you need it. The bath is well stocked with excellent soap, shampoo and conditioner from Neutogena and very nice towels. The beds were soft and comfortable. The room was supplied with a heater that you plug in and was needed due to the cool evenings while we were there. There are two big rocking chairs outside your room for sitting a spell--nice on the warmer night. The door locks with a big key--nice not to have a card for a change. Small refrig in the room kept our drinks cold. Nicely appointed with desk, two chairs, footstool, large tv, very large armiore to hold tv and fridge is hidden in it.

Highly recommend this place. Would and will stay here again in a heartbeat!!!!! We arrived very early in the morning and I called and told them we would be arriving that late (office is closed). She left the room open with the lights on and the key stashed so we could get some sleep. Checked in later in the morn. What more could you ask for!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I was not in Townsend by choice, so this is not the type of motel or area where I would normally stay. After looking at the Tally Ho Inn and the Highland Manor Inn, this was by far the best choice in Townsend. The owner is nice, a true Appalachian mountain man. I was offered coffee and tea at check in. Photos from other reviewers are very accurate representations of the rooms. The room was very clean and the bathroom was modern--far more updated than the other motels. I liked the hardwood over the carpeting at the other motels. The heat and AC are controlled by remote and worked fine. Wifi and satellite TV. hair dryer and mini fridge in the room. There were others staying in the rooms beside us, but we never heard any noises from their rooms. The towels and sheets were fine. Both were cream colored, not dingy. The 1970s key and exterior door made me a little uncomfortable the first two nights, but I think that's the big city girl in me. We slept peacefully and confortably every night we were there. Very close to Cade's Cove. Not much else in the area. I think the only gas was at the campground store. Be aware that you'll need to drive 15-20 miles if you need anything, like a prescription.

My husband and I recently stayed at the Townsend Gateway Inn for 6 WONDERFUL nights. We enjoyed the peace and quiet that the “Peaceful Side of the Smokies” is all about. Since I'm a regular on TripAdvisor I knew that the hotel was an old hotel that had undergone a remodel and that it was a very small “mom and pop” type business.

Check in was a breeze, the owners are very personable and helpful. Their dog Kiley greeted us most every day with a wagging tail. We are dog people so we very much appreciated that. Our room was just as described on TGI's website. It was spotless. Everything was working order. The bedding was clean and didn't appear to be worn. We had plenty of towels and the owner stopped by with a basket full of snacks, coffee and coffee cups. Our heating and air was operated by remote control and kept the room cool on our first few days when it was warm and warm the last couple of days when the weather turned rather cold. We had people in the room next to us but yet we never knew they were there. The place was very quiet for us, we never even heard anyone else taking a shower in the rooms next to ours. The TV was not flat screen but was sufficient for us to catch the news and weather each morning before we headed out for our day in the park. As much as we enjoyed the hotel the GSMNP is really the whole reason for us being in the area.

If you are looking for something similar to a “Hilton” or “Corporate Hotel” experience, don't stay here but if you are looking for a peaceful, Mom and Pop, CLEAN, hotel........The Townsend Gateway Inn is your place. Know what to expect then come and enjoy “The Peaceful Side of the Smokies,” just like we did.
