Looking for a genuine National Park experience on the Tennessee side of the Smoky Mountains? To be honest, it's not easy to find. The towns of Gatlinberg and Pigeon Forge are the worse my husband and I have ever seen in our extensive national park travels.
Their garish neon lights are worse than any Florida experience, bar none. How glad we were that our instincts brought us to Townsend, and to this place. The owners are laid-back genuine people who bring their herd of five horses in every night at 5. They like the outdoor life and, when you sit on the deck or walk the pastures, there are no neon lights anywhere to be seen.
If you want to go to a National Park, so you can sit in traffic jams and look at neon lights flashing in front of your eyes, pick Gatlinberg. If you want a place where you can sit and do nothing, or find a few nice hikes near by, pick this area.
We'll definitely be back.
