Our family of seven, including our 8 year old granddaughter, enjoyed the Zip Line attraction that is part of Ocoee Outdoors on a Sunday morning recently. Our guides, Chris and Matt, were entertaining while still conveying all necessary safety information in an informative and humorous manner. Everyone wore the required harness and helmet, except our guides who wore only the harness but no helmets, causing the mothers in our group some concern. But they were young and will live forever.

There are 7 separate lines of various lengths and speeds, including the last longest one which allows two people to zip alongside ( and race or hold hands with) each other. There were a total of about 15 in our group and it took about two hours to complete the course. Enjoyed the outing very much and would recommend it to anyone.

A group of 8 of us went rafting this past weekend with them on the Middle Ocoee. I have been rafting on the Ocoee several times before, and have never had an issue. This was an unpleasant experience for all of us.

Their scheduled groups are large, and we had about 6 boats, each with 6-7 rafters and a guide in each one. First, we were delayed for a good while just to get on the bus to take us to the river, as some delays earlier in the day had snowballed, causing every other outing to be late. After we put in all the boats, we each went down the first rapid, which was not very large, and began to regroup right after it. Some people in other boats lost their paddles, and we were forced to paddle over to them and pick each paddle up. One woman in one of the boats fell out on the first rapid and had to be pulled back in. After we regrouped, she was frazzled, and decided she could not go on. Well, since we had 6 boats, all 6 boats, and everyone in them, had to wait by the bank of the river while the customer and all of the guides stood by the side of the road to wait for someone, anyone to pick her up and take her back.

Note that I am not faulting the woman, as I understand people can get scared (although in that regard there should be even the slightest amount of screening for people who will not enjoy the experience), but about 40 paying customers waiting in pouring cold rain for about 40 minutes until this one woman was picked up. There was no system in place or chase car following the boats to pick up any customers. We just had to wait until a bus from one company or another would take her on.

Once we started moving, we came across a kayaker who had a small cut on his thumb and his boat had become waterlogged. His two kayaking friends were sitting in eddys 20 feet away, and rather than they get over to the bank to help their friend, we had to paddle over and sit and wait until his boat could be emptied, then transport him and his kayak to another part of the river. I white water kayak as well, and these people were extremely unprepared for such a situation, so I can appreciate receiving help from other people on the river. But we were paying customers with limited time. Other arrangements should have been made, and not our boat again to have to wait for the situation to be resolved. Again, all the boats had to wait until it was settled.

After we got back in, we went to a small rapid, where our guide improperly navigated us into it, causing us to dangerously flip in shallow water. I understand flipping can be fun or unintentional, but this was not a place to do it, and the rescue procedure was completely botched. The people in our boat could have been seriously injured for naught. However, one 15 y.o. boy in our boat also became frazzled, and refused to go on. So, all 6 boats, and all the people, again had to wait by the side of the road for him to be picked up, for about 20-25 minutes, again in the rain (yes I know you get wet when rafting, but sitting in cold rain without moving is much different, and most people were really shivering with blue lips).

The experience was very unpleasant, as we were not able to raft for more than a couple minutes before another issue turned up which required all the boats to wait. Most of the time, the other boats had to wait around a bend, and thus could not see and had no idea what they were waiting for. A couple of the guides said how this was a bad trip and we should ask for our money back.

When we finally got back, I asked to speak to the manager and let him know my experience, but everything I said fell on deaf ears. He stated that is simply how they do things there and how they have been doing things for 30+ years and that this was their first complaint, which is highly doubtful. I suggested a better protocol for picking up customers or for a chase car, which he seemed not to understand and to dismiss. He never apologized and saw nothing wrong with how the trip had gone.

I have been with several outfitters on the Ocoee, and this was the most unprofessional I have been with. I understand things happen beyond our control, but what is important is how a company responds to those circumstances, and Ocoee Outdoors was ill-prepared for any situation. The fact that they require all their boats to stay together only means that the chance of you sitting and waiting are 6x as great, since any issue can happen to any other boat, and everyone will wait along with them.

Go with an outfitter that has a plan and sends less boats down at once.

Did the Middle rafting trip and was very pleased. Only 2nd time I've ever done white-water rafting and this was a perfect excursion. Overall about 3 hrs and plenty of rapids! Our guide Jody was experienced and knowledgeable and did a great job entertaining us along the way.
We also did the zip-lines at Ocoee Zipz. This is a good combo. There are 7 different zip lines and our 2 guides, Chris and Johnny did a great job motivating us. Definitely recommend both excursions!

This was the first time I had ever done anything like this. Our River Guide was Casey and he did an excellent job. He knows the river like the back of his hand and obviously loves his work! Knowledgable, friendly staff, hot showers and photo souvenirs top off a wild ride and gorgeous scenery. Will definitely come back for more!

My family goes to Chattanooga every year to visit our extended family. This year, we decided to take a trip down to the Ocoee. Some friends told us how good Ocoee Outdoors is for whitewater rides. They weren't lying. Our guide, Patrick M., did a wonderful job, and showed us a great time. Very comfortable weather, temperature, water speed during the beginning part of August. Patrick knew all of the fun spots to stop, or keep circling in a current. I would highly recommend Ocoee Outdoors, and Patrick M.
