We just returned from a two-night stay at the Comfort Inn Nashville/Demonbreun Street. The hotel was inexpensive and close to downtown and other area attractions, which was the main reason we selected it. They also offered a free continental breakfast.
Following check-in, we went to our non-smoking, king room, which was a little smaller than I expected. The furnishings were a bit outdated and worn. There was a cigarette burn in the lounge chair and a pancake size bare spot in the cottage cheese ceiling above the bed. A few dead moths were in the corner along with some dust, but the main carpet area seemed fairly clean.
When we entered the bathroom area, the first thing I noticed was the tile floor, which appeared to be dirty. My husband thought it was just my imagination, but he sprayed it anyway with the disinfectant spray we brought. The following morning, he took a shower and got water on the tile floor. He wiped it up with one of the white towels, and, to our shock, it was almost black. I was right, it had not been mopped prior to our arrival. I complained to the young man at the desk and asked him to have the maids mop the floor when they cleaned our room that day. When we returned from our outting late that afternoon, the room had been cleaned, but the floor still had not been mopped. I realized this when I dampened a wash rag and wiped the floor. It was black with dirt and grime.
The TV had limited channels--regular area stations, plus a couple of HBO channels, TBS, CNN, Weather Channel, etc. The vanity/bathroom area was fairly small, and there were some sloppy cosmetic repairs around the toilet area. We were kept awake a good part of the first night by some continuous nearby banging--like a door slamming.
The continental breakfast was fair (do-it-yourself waffles, cereal, bananas, bagles, and donuts), although in hindsight, it would not necessarily be an incentive for us again.
The hotel lobby area was small, and the check-in desk area was a bit run down. The corridors seemed kind of dirty and many of the hotel room doors had chipped paint, dents, and scuffed areas--not really the best impression for guests as they arrive.
On the positive side, the hotel was a few minutes drive to downtown and within 10-20 minutes from other sites we visited (Belle Meade, the Hermitage, the Parthenon, Opryland Hotel). Good restaurants and bars were also close by. We did not get a good, warm feel from most of the staff, although a couple were courteous. The bed was comfortable, and sheets appeared to be clean. The small four-cup coffee maker and blow dryer (barely hanging to the wall) were convenient, as were the small microwave, refrigerator and full-size ironing board. The shower/bath was large and appeared to be clean, and there were plenty of washcloths and towels, which also seemed clean.
All in all, the hotel was a disappointment, and we have decided we will not return when we visit Nashville again next year. The dirty bathroom floor, which was not cleaned at our request, was the nail in the coffin. For the price we paid though ($159 total for two nights), I suppose we should not have expected too much. Next time, we will dish out a little more money, which will enhance our total vacation experience.
