Have tried other places however this place was DEVINE... Taste, Spiciness, crunch and HEAT!! Nice environment, friendly staff, had to wait 20 minutes but it was well worth it. If you want some juicy spicy chicken 400 Degrees is the best!

This is a new addition to the Nashville hot chicken choices. It is very clean and the staff are courteous and helpful. The chicken comes in three degrees of heat: 100 Degrees (mildly spicy), 200 Degrees (definitely spicy), and 400 Degrees (do you have medical insurance?). The wings at 100 Degrees are perfect. My wife tried the breast quarter at 100 Degrees and thought it very spicy. I tried the leg quarter at 400 Degrees and, although it was delicious, it took a quart of buttermilk to lower the thermostat in my GI tract. The 400 Degree chicken is only for the serious hot chicken enthusiast. They also have pork chops prepared just like the chicken and a variety of sides. If you like hot chicken and want to walk on the wild side, don't pass up this great eating spot. While there is sit down eating available, it is really geared more towards take-out. Call ahead for take out, but allow about 45 minutes for your food to be prepared fresh.

I reviewed 400 Degrees a few years back (see below) but felt compelled to re-review it since they just recently moved to 319 Peabody St downtown just a few blocks south of the tourist district. They are at the corner of Peabody and 4th, in the "Peabody Food Court" building (same as Quizno's) right next to the new Music City Convention Center.

The food is exactly the same. Great hot chicken...with "400 degrees" being as hot as Prince's "hot". It will light you up...but so worth it. Sides are the same: fries, slaw, and potato salad. One thing that 400 Degrees does differently than their competitors is they serve wings and pork chops, which is a little different.

In any case, what really sets 400 Degrees apart now is the location. It is in a much better part of town, with ample and safe parking. Plus there's PLENTY of room to eat where the old location only had 2 tables. This is also a negative for many hot chicken restaurants...and to have space in a good part of town really sets 400 Degrees ahead of some of their competition in my mind. Plus, they're really friendly folks there. They're always kind and actually have customer service skills that certain other "royal" hot chicken places don't always show. I would suggest calling ahead to place your order for 2 reasons: 1) it gets busy during lunch especially and 2) double check that they're open. Hot chicken places are known for just taking a few hours off because the weather's nice. Although I think 400 Degrees seems to be a more professionally run establishment than others...

So for tourists, I'd say 400 Degrees is really the perfect introduction to Nashville hot chicken. Prince's is a must-try too, but you'll feel more comfortable (ambiance wise) at 400 Degrees.

Hot chicken is a regional specialty here in Nashville. Prince's Hot Chicken is probably the best known purveyor of this cuisine, but 400 Degrees does a good job of it as well. 400 Degrees is very much on par with Prince's level of heat and taste. If you've never tried hot chicken and think you can handle hot/spicy food, you better step back a bit and try the medium first. It will light you on fire, but it is well worth it. The sides are great, especially the potato salad. My advice is to always order cool sides (potato salad, cole slaw) with hot chicken to help offset the flames.

There are only a few tables at 400 Degrees and it is definitely more of a to-go kind of place. I'd suggest calling ahead and then picking up your food. The staff there is much much much nicer than Prince's. Prince's tends to be a little arrogant in their service, but not at 400 Degrees. They are very nice and friendly. It is in a fairly rough part of town, so I don't think I'd suggest it to travelers, but if you're in Nashville for an extended period of time and don't mind the neighborhood, 400 Degrees is a great place to get your Hot Chicken fix.
