For our first visit to Nashville recently, we really wanted to stay in the downtown area within walking distance of the attractions we were interested in - Broadway, the Ryman Auditorium, the Country Music Hall of Fame, etc.. However, all the hotels in this area were very expensive - at least $300 a night on top of which there would have been all the taxes and charges that would make the total much higher. There’d also be at least $30 a night for parking. So, the cost drove us to find a better option, which we did…

With the help of TA, we found the Timothy Demonbreun House B&B and it proved to be perfect - in fact one of the best B&Bs we’ve ever stayed in.

The house is located a couple of miles from downtown Nashville in an elegant street filled with historic homes. The house itself is large and beautiful, and tastefully and comfortably furnished. We had the only ground floor guest room, which was spacious and comfortable with a good bathroom and even a fridge (always a big plus point for us!). We even had our own porch area with rocking chairs etc.. There was effective A/C and plenty power outlets to allow charging of our electronic devices. At the back of the house is a large pool with chairs and loungers as well as a hot-tub - a pleasant place to relax when not exploring downtown Nashville. Getting to and from downtown is easy - it’s only about $10.00 by taxi or an easy drive (but parking downtown is expensive, so beware), or Richard may well be able to drive you in and pick you up later if his schedule allows it.

One of the best things about B&Bs in general, and the Timothy Demonbreun House in particular, is the help the owners can give you over such things as restaurants, activities and other nuggets of essential local knowledge. Richard was brilliant in this respect; within 30 minutes of arrival, he’d sorted out places ideal for us to eat each evening, taking into account our preferences and fitting around the various shows and activities we’d already planned. For example, he advised us not to eat at the Bluebird Cafe as we had intended (which we’d booked for one evening for the music) but instead recommended the nearby Firefly Grille. When we saw the food at the Bluebird Cafe, we were grateful he'd given us this advice.

In recent years, we’ve become wary of B&Bs where you stay in the owner’s house, as you can too easily feel you’re intruding into their life or, conversely, that they’re watching you all the time. Or they give you a long list of house rules on arrival. Or they tell you what time breakfast is, or what it will consist of, whether you like it not. One B&B we stayed in a few years ago felt so creepy that we were convinced the owner probably kept the bodies of previous guests in the basement - we checked out of that one very quickly! Richard, however, seems to get the whole relationship exactly right; we never felt watched or monitored but whenever we needed his help or advice he seemed always to be available. And we weren’t forced to be sociable with other guests at breakfast as often happens. Here, each morning we would have a brief chat with Richard in the kitchen when we first emerged from our room, sorting out what we wanted for breakfast and discussing our plans for the day, after which we would enjoy our breakfast at a nice table in the attractive dining room. And it turns out that Richard is also an excellent cook - so we had a delicious breakfast every morning.

My wife has a mobility problem, for which she uses both a wheelchair and an electric mobility scooter, although she can walk short distances unaided. This is the reason we booked the ground-floor room. However, access from the car to the house does involve about half a dozen steps or the alternative - a wide, straight and solid but rather steep ramp. Inside the house all is level access and wide doorways, so no difficulties there.

Richard told us he has had trouble with credit card payments in the past, so insists on payment by cash or cheque. Unfortunately, for anyone not based in the US, this does make it hard to pay the deposit when booking. I know that getting my UK bank to send a US dollar cheque is both slow and expensive, so that didn’t seem a good option. The alternative Richard suggested was to use Western Union to send cash electronically. Well, I’d never used WU before so I had to install the app (there was some reason I’ve now forgotten why the website couldn’t be used), create an account, and generate the transfer so that Richard could collect it as cash from his local WU office. Of course, Western Union charged me for this service and - unfortunately - as I paid with my UK credit card, my card issuer charged a cash-advance fee AND interest. Still, I got there in the end - and it was worth the trouble.

Overall then, this is one of the nicest and best B&Bs we’ve ever stayed in and we would recommend it very highly. In fact, only yesterday, my wife did recommend it to someone she knows who is planning a trip to Nashville. And we are now thinking of returning in a year or two to attend CMA Fest, and I don’t think there’s any doubt we’ll be hoping to stay again at the Timothy Demonbreun House.

Room Tip: The Cabernet Room is the only accessible room - all the rest are upstairs.

Easy to get to. Innkeeper is very accommodating and friendly. Good suggestions on things to do and is very knowledgable. Pool is large and there is a hot tub. Food was great. The house has lots of character. Our room was great, even a private porch.

The house is beautiful, rather grand but very comfortable with many really considerate touches, like help yourself soft drinks, ice and hot beverages. Our room was one of the smaller ones but well furnished and with a four poster. Nothing was too much trouble for Richard, who gave us lifts into town although it was not far in an uber, lots of local information and told us about his fascinating family history in Nashville. He also cooks a really mean breakfast! The area is quiet and my only disappointment was that the pool was not yet ready due to some unseasonable weather, but it looked really inviting and there were loungers or a pleasant conservatory to relax in. If we go back to Nashville we'll definitely stay here again.

The Timothy Demonbreun House is a marvelous bed and breakfast. Great hospitality and beautifully restored. Richard, the proprietor, was very accommodating and served us a fantastic breakfast at our leisure. The rooms were extremely clean and comfortable. We hope to visit again in the fall. We highly recommend.
