“Off main beat cafe with Singer/Songwriters trying to make it”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 21, 2013

This was my first trip to Nashville, and the music throughout the whole city was amazing. My friends and I did the the main Broadway St scene Saturday night, which was fun, but very crowded and noisy.
The next night we started on Broadway and in talking with locals heard of the Bluebird Cafe where singer/songwriters perform, but there was a long line to get in when we showed up at 9PM on Sunday night. We turned around to leave, and one of the cowboys standing in line started a conversation asking if we were looking for other places less busy where there was good music, we said yes of course. He mentioned the "Commodore Grill" in the Holiday Inn Nashville West End just down the street.
When we walked in lobby of the Holiday Inn there was a young lady tuning her guitar. Went into the Commodore Grill where a band was performing. Typical hotel style restaurant with a bar at one end, and the stage at opposite, with dining tables in the middle. At different locations in the lounge there were several other singers looking at lyrics or tuning instruments. Place was not crowded, we sat at a table and ordered food and drinks. Later that band finished, and then the Commodore had this deal where 3 singer/songwriters come on stage and take turns singing 1 song each while the other 2 listen, then 3 more singers came on and did same. Saw 12 singers in all and it was fantastic. One was a 15 year old female, another was an 18 year old female named "Ckenzi", and several others. 2 mentioned they just got to Nashville a few weeks ago and it was obvious they were trying to make it big following their dreams in music.

Awesome experience, great music, excellent sound.

Also realized this Holiday Inn is coincidentally next to the Vanderbilt Commodore's football stadium.

Regarding the food, I had the Hugo's Salad, which was excellent. Buffalo wings were good, not great, but better than you get in most bars.

The Commodore Grill is a great place for couples, families, or friends that like original singer/songwriter music and want a relaxed place to listen. Highly highly recommended.

“Up & Coming Songwriters & Good Food, too...”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 11, 2013

This is not your typical Holiday Inn restaurant & bar - The Commodore has been home to songwriters-in-the-round performances Tuesdays through Sundays starting at 7pm for several years now. The dimly lit seating area is meant to draw your attention to the small stage.

On top of hearing great songs from budding performing songwriters, the restaurant offers a good selection of American fare served by easy-going staff. While not gourmet-quality, each of the menu items would hold their own in a taste testing of pub food. The attraction here is the songwriters, and the food & beverages help in enjoying the evening.

“Great music, food, & coffee!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 15, 2011

Songwriters sing their own composed songs to a guitar strum or keyboard playing. Nashville is the only place in the world where you can actually watch & hear a country song being born, & Debi Champion's writers nights, Tues-Wed-Thurs, 7pm til ??? at the Commodore Lounge, Holiday Inn Vanderbilt is the very best. This author remembers, years ago, after writing 50 songs, went to Nashville to hear the best, went to a Debi Champion writers night, heard great song after great song after great song, and then wanted to go home & shred all 50 songs! Debi Champion books the best, including a group of writers visiting from Kentucky, singing great self-penned songs, and comically calling themselves "The Fried Pickle Queens". What a hoot! Great sound, great ambiance, great burger, great coffee.
