Owner description: Since opening in 2001, the Frist Center for Visual Arts has hosted a spectacular array of art from around the world. Not only an important cultural focal point for the city of Nashville, it is also a significant architectural structure, occupying one of Nashville’s great historic landmarks, the former main post office. Constructed from 1933 to 1934 under the direction of the local architectural firm of Marr & Holman, it displays both of the most distinctive architectural styles of the period: Classicism and Art Deco.

This is a great art museum to visit. The building itself is a work of art. The works they pull in are really interesting but be aware that they need a copy editor for their explanations and sometimes even their plastic applique writing on the walls.

A cold and rainy Saturday afternoon prompted my husband and I to seek an indoor activity. We were fortunate the Rembrandt and Dutch Masters of the Golden Age, and Art of Ancient Americas were on exhibit. Both well organized, excellent historical content, and fine examples well researched. We were surprised to find this gem in the middle of CW music city. Formerly a post office, the Frist is a fine example of adaptive reuse architecture. Do not make the mistake of passing this up when in town.

I lived in Nashville in the 80's and that was the last time I visited this building; when it was still the main post office. Don't let that deter you from a visit, as the building itself is a magnificent example of Art Deco design. I am appreciative that the Frist family invested in this structure and gave it new life and purpose. We may have many more closed post offices in the near future!
There is not a permanent collection, but that's ok with me. That takes even bigger bucks and I think the concept of changing exhibits is a good one. I saw the Dutch Masters exhibit and enjoyed it very much. There is also a nice little cafe at the rear of the building; it was a nice day to sit outside. This center is easy walking distance from all of the country music venues, also on Broadway. I recommend those fans mix it up a little and add this quiet tour to their schedules.

Located in the old Main Post Office in downtown Nashville, the Frist Center for Visual Arts features ever changing presentations of a wide variety of the Arts. The building itself is a beautiful structure worthy of a closer look and not just as a place to house art displays. The Frist is located within blocks of Lower Broadway with all its country music flavor and within easy walking distance to the Country Music Hall of Fame, giving the visitor to Nashville a wide appreciation of the city's attractions, from Fine Arts to good old Country flavor.
