Owner description: Since opening in 2001, the Frist Center for Visual Arts has hosted a spectacular array of art from around the world. Not only an important cultural focal point for the city of Nashville, it is also a significant architectural structure, occupying one of Nashville’s great historic landmarks, the former main post office. Constructed from 1933 to 1934 under the direction of the local architectural firm of Marr & Holman, it displays both of the most distinctive architectural styles of the period: Classicism and Art Deco.

“Depends On The Exhibition”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 7, 2012

I've been here twice now with my fiancé, primarily because it was free (college night on Thursdays). The first time was great - I'd give it 5 stars. We spent about 2 hours, and left only because they were closing. The second time was less than stellar. Obviously, everybody has a preference when it comes to art, so I would recommend checking out their exhibitions to see if anything looks interesting to you. The building is beautiful, and it's a wonderful museum (albeit somewhat small), but if there's nothing there to keep your attention, then you may want to try another time.

“A first rate art museum”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 7, 2012

Frist has a wonderful outreach program to the elementary schools. They may have it for other schools, but we have no experience with that. This is an old post office building with a small branch still in the basement. The gift shop is good. The galleries are great. The floors are OLD wood. The parking is pretty good for downtown. The food is good in the cafe and there is an outdoor seating area. Only drawback is that ugly modern art in front of the building. WHO MAKES THAT STUFF?

“Not worth the price of admission”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 5, 2012

This place is tiny. That's fine. I've seen a lot of small museums. But $10 per person for a small museum? Absolutely not worth the price of admission. It really depends on the exhibition, though. If there's something there you want to see, it might be worth it. I've seen Gee's Bend quilts at another museum. And old oil landscapes don't impress me. So, I shouldn't have wasted my money.

One other weird thing: it's a beautiful art deco building. In the midst of taking an iPhone photo of the grand hall, I was told that pictures were prohibited. Of the building?! Come on. It was unnecessary.

Don't waste your money.

“Nashville's Finest”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 3, 2012

Besides the fantastic art deco architecture the exhibits are excellent. Although a "small" museum compared to NYC or Chicago the works exhibited here give's one the opportunity to see things up close and on a personal level.

“First class in every way”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 29, 2012

First the building. Housed in an art deco showstopper with glasswork and style that in itself is worth the price of admission.

The exhibitions are masterfully curated which means you are not just wandering through gazing at paintings, you are immersed in a visual and educational experience that you will not forget.
