The museum's interpretive exhibits begin 15,000 years ago with prehistoric humans and continue through the early 1900s with special sections on Native American Indians, explorers, pioneers, the Antebellum age, the Civil War, and the beginning of a new century. The State Museum is open every day except Mondays, and admission is free.

Went with My daughter's class. Was great but crowded. Would like to go back without the group so we could have more time to explore.

“Worth Checking Out”
Reviewed September 22, 2013

On a trip to see the Capitol, I also wanted to have a look at this spot, as it is free. And for a free museum, it's absolutely worth a visit. They did a nice job with it and even have a bench that was carved by Davy Crockett himself. If you have the time, check it out. They also have a very nice gift shop where I made a couple of purchases.

“Great museum!”
Reviewed September 21, 2013

This museum was way better than I thought it was going to be -- It was huge! There was so much to look at & do & it was free! I was very impressed! We parked in a parking garage down the street. They had lots of awesome artifacts & tons of information! We ended up leaving before we were actually done looking at everything because it was getting ready to close -- I'd plan on staying 2-4 hours.

“Excellent museum”
Reviewed September 20, 2013

What a brilliant museum, so much to see and do, they had a great exhibition on the civil war when we visited. Children would really enjoy visiting this museum. Really well set out and plenty of information on all the artefacts.

“Just...Excellent!”
Reviewed September 13, 2013

This is a very high quality museum that will keep you busy for a good 2-3 hours. It did me, anyway. The second floor of the museum is dedicated to Tennessee's Civil War history and is filled with incredible artifacts from that era. And the best part about the museum is that it's free!
