Although I had visited many southern plantations, I found Belle Meade a totally different experience. Yes, there's a large house and outbuildings, but the atmosphere is very different, perhaps because Belle Meade was primarily a horse farm. In addition, the farm began simply, and the original house was a modest log building still on the grounds. Many of the furnishings are original, so there's a real sense of authenticity. The guide brought the family to life with stories and talked about the horse breeding. After the tour, guests could enjoy a free wine tasting and then wander the grounds.
