Owner description: Belle Meade Plantation is a non-profit historic site located in Nashville, TN. Established in 1807, Belle Meade was revered as the greatest thoroughbred stud farm in the United States. It was home to Iroquois, the first American bred horse to win the Epsom Derby and the great foundation sire,Bonnie Scotland, whose descendants include Secretariat, Seattle Slew, Native Dancer, Big Brown and California Chrome. Belle Meade was owned and operated by the Harding-Jackson family for nearly a century from 1807 until 1906. Today their home is restored to its turn of the century appearance along with several original outbuildings.

Although I had visited many southern plantations, I found Belle Meade a totally different experience. Yes, there's a large house and outbuildings, but the atmosphere is very different, perhaps because Belle Meade was primarily a horse farm. In addition, the farm began simply, and the original house was a modest log building still on the grounds. Many of the furnishings are original, so there's a real sense of authenticity. The guide brought the family to life with stories and talked about the horse breeding. After the tour, guests could enjoy a free wine tasting and then wander the grounds.

Another great way to learn about southern history not to mention some interesting race horse history.

This is a great tour while visiting Nashville. Belle Meade Plantation offers a guided tour of the mansion and self guided tour of the grounds. The tour guide was extremely knowledgeable and answered questions about the history of the area and the family business. If you are interested in horse breeding or racing, this tour is for you. If you are interested in the workings of a plantation, this tour is for you. Wine tasting at the end of the tour was an added bonus. Grounds were well maintained. Go on a sunny day!

To me the word plantation conjures up the vision of a huge, cotton growing estate. Belle Meade is different. Because its renown for horse breeding, there is a different feel here. The mansion itself is a family home full of the furnishings and belongings of its former owners. It has a very personal atmosphere. There are several outbuildings on the grounds, including a carriage house and a winery. All in all, Belle Meade was an interesting visit.

Very well preserved and interesting. Escorted tour is entertaining though crowed at the time (too many allowed in a group.) Excellent collection of historical artifacts and architechure.
