This place is full of history and it amazes me that the staff of the Hermitage have kept the place in such great shape. The thing I love the most about the plantation is it offers a self guided tour with audio (optional). They also have a carriage ride (for an additional cost) that takes out out back and shows you where the slaves used to reside. Though the homes are no longer standing, you can see the foundation. Pretty sobering! The exhibits are incredible and they almost make you feel like you've stepped back in time.

This was a gorgeous place, I especially liked the old hand-painted wallpapers which were very unusual. I would have liked to see more done with the grounds and with information and interpretation on the extensive grounds.

We love history and this place was full of it. This is a self guided tour with taped information about the Hermitage. It tells about everything from the start, during Jackson's lifetime, meeting his wife, the slaves and details to this, the gardens and so much more. If you like history this is a must. We loved everything, especially the burial grounds and how beautiful his and wife's resting place is. I'd plan to stay at least three or four hours to see everything if you like taking your time and be warned there is a lot of walking to see everything so wear good walking shoes.

The "average" rating might seem a negative, but the Hermitage is a museum and a vision of life's stage for the very elite more than a century ago. It was pleasant, but it wasn't fantasmic or ethereal. The staff were thorough and friendly in their explanations and guidance. The grounds and facility are well maintained and presented and accessible. It is a treat to have this treasure in our "back yard".
