“President Andrew Jackson: home and history”

Inside the building, you provide ID (such as driver's license) in return for the audio tour equipment (headphones and channel selector). Each stopping point on your walking tour has a number you can punch in on your channel selector to get the audio portion of the tour. This works very well. Your first stop, though, is a 12-15 minute movie that does a good job of introducing President Andrew Jackson's life and family. It does help, however, if you've done some reading on the subject before you come to The Hermitage. The more you know about the man and his life, the more this beautiful and historical property can be appreciated. You might enjoy noticing that the entrance to The Hermitage is on Rachel's Lane. President Jackson's wife was named Rachel.

“A Fun History Lesson”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 26, 2012

This is a beautiful plantation. The tour is given by a different tour guide in each area. They are dressed is costume and know every detail about Old Hickory. It is a pleasant walk around the grounds with everything well marked. The audio tour makes it very easy to see and hear about everything.

“A Presidential home”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 25, 2012

This plantation is run for the state of Tennessee by the Hermitage Foundation and they do an excellent job. The home is restored and lovely, though the rooms cannot be entered, only peered into. The tour takes you into the main hall and upstairs with a guide. Then access to the dining room and old kitchen on your own. The grounds are large but not manicured as are some estates. It gives it the appearance of a lived-in home rather than a show place. In good weather in the summer the wagon rides are fun. Nice gift shop and museum.

“Great place to let your imagination wander back in time”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 25, 2012

Beautifully preserved old southern home and a perfect place to spend a lazy Sunday afternoon. It was my second visit. My first was as a grade school kid and I've always remembered it and Andrew Jackson's part in American History.
