“Sunday lunch and more”
Reviewed February 25, 2014

On the last day in Oz before our midnight flight we were taken to Yarra Valley for a pleasent sunday visiting wineries etc. We had lunch (carvery) at the Yarra Glen Grand Hotel. Excellent quality. Choice of meats, roast veg..just like being back home in Wales. I love these Victorian hotels in Australia. I will return, next time I intend to stay a few nights.

Lovely pub, in a fantastic location for touring around the wineries. Room was perfect, not 5 star but lovely comfy bed, tv, not sure what else you could want. Breakfast was self serve and really tasty. Would come again.

We dropped in for dinner at this pub during a January visit to the Yarra Valley.

It is a fine, historic pub that has obviously been done up a few times....leaving it with a slightly crazy and quirky interior.

Menu was reasonably varied and dishes well cooked and presented. Service model was the usual pub style – informal and friendly. Good choice of local wines.

All in all, quite pleasant but no wow factor.

Firstly, to other reviewers - rooms may be small and there are stairs. (horror!) Well, that's because the building is old. Rooms were small back then and since patrons arrived by horse and cart it's unlikely the hotel had lifts!

Old it may be but very interesting and quirky. I didn't find the decor tacky at all but fun and colourful. the mix of old and new was great.

The meal was excellent (if a little salty.) Large portions, reasonable prices and a cold beer on a hot day. Couldn't have asked for more. Locals and staff were friendly and the coffee was excellent.

Looking forward to a return visit.

Our family enjoys regular lunches at the Yarra Glen Grand Hotel as the food, service and entertainment is always very good. After a day at the Yarra Glen races with friends who do not live nearby we decided to book an overnight stay at the Grand. The rooms looked a little small for us as we both had young children. The managers house at the rear of the hotel looked to be a great idea for our two families. The house is terrific for families sharing as it cuts the costs down a little ($450 p/n midweek). It has 4 queen rooms each with their own t.v. and 2 bathrooms. The bedrooms are separated by the kitchen dining / living space and there is a laundry as well. But the real seller for us was the in ground pool as we knew our kids would love it. That's where the house lets itself down, the pool is cold and the spa attached was also freezing as the gas heating was obviously broken, along with several surrounding pool tiles which were broken and jagged. The outdoor area around the pool is nice but don't bother about using the bbq, we lifted the lid and to our horror it was caked in black and god knows how old the leftover food on it was. Inside the house the bedrooms are fine but could do with a decent clean as there was plenty of cobwebs (with spiders attached) and a heavy layer of dust, the bathrooms were a real disappointment as they didn't appear to have even been cleaned as my 6 year old pointed out that there was wee stains on the seat!!!! Hair in the shower and beard stubble in the sink. Both of the toilets also didn't flush very well and tended to run water for hours. The lounge area has a t.v. and stereo which is terrific except the furniture in that area is in serious need of replacement, think 1975 and you would not be far off, its so well worn that there is no comfort left. A continental breakfast is included in the tariff which is quite nice with plenty to choose from. All in all we would continue to enjoy meals at the Hotel but perhaps not stay overnight.

Room Tip: The managers house behind the hotel is great for 2 families sharing, but for the cost could be clean...

Promising Grand old rooms we got a tired old room with threadbare carpets and torn curtains and walls in need of some fresh paint YET paid top price. A very Loud reverberating noise through the pipes all night and upon mentioning this....total indifference... Not the way to treat paying customers. Not a fantastic start to our balloon flight so suggest staying elsewhere.

Room Tip: Stay somewhere else

Extremely overpriced food for a pub, the prices are suited to an upmarket restaurant, decor so tacky and an eyesore. Ordered glass of beer & wine, both glasses were dirty with lipstick around rims of glasses. Beer & wine overpriced.
