“A good package”
Reviewed May 21, 2008

We stayed the one night at this hotel (part of the Holgate Brewhouse) on one of their accommodation packages.

This bundled a Village View room with a 3-course meal for two plus two of the brewery's tasting 'paddles', and hot breakfast.

Check-in was efficient and cheerful and the room met our needs. As a previous reviewer mentioned, the lack of exterior handles means that you have to let the door bang to ensure that it shuts, but this didn't cause any undue problem for us. Adding a simple external pull handle wouldn't go amiss, however.

The meal was excellent, albeit a little on the pricey side, and we left feeling nicely full. The bar & eating area is quite cosy, and a table by the fire was welcome on a late Autumn evening.

Breakfast was good, including espresso coffee (often a paid extra at the more expensive places I stay for business) and a good selection of hot & cold options.

If we were staying in Woodend again, we would happily stay at Keatings.

Holgate Brewhouse is a pub. It is tiny and cozy, just a small bar, with a lounge and a couple of small dining rooms and a function room. There is a nice courtyard dining area too. Internet booking enquiry was followed up very promptly, booking over the phone was done quickly and efficiently. Our room was ready on our arrival, and we were given a quick guided tour of the building before being shown the way to our room. Staff were very friendly and helpful.

The room was huge, sofa bed, small LCD TV on the wall, a fairly comfortable queen size bed (bit firm for my liking, but otherwise ok). Linen was snowy white and clean. The bathroom was interesting - no door so anyone lying on the bed had an interesting show put on for them if allowed to stay :-). Not my cuppa tea! WC had a door though, so there was a little privacy. TV was badly placed, you couldn't see it properly from the bed.

We didn't get a lot of sleep, the wind howled, the badly fitting windows banged. The doors had no handles on the outside, just opened by keys only - consequently every time anyone left their room (or any of the rooms downstairs) the banging door reverberated through the building. The noise stopped about midnight and started up again at 6 am (I guess when the staff arrived).

The rate included a cooked breakfast from a small but sufficient menu, in the dining room. We ate dinner in the restaurant at night, a lovely well-cooked meal, huge portions.

If I could be guaranteed a more comfortable bed next time and a bathroom with a door, I'd stay here again. The small problems we had could be encountered anywhere. It was a bit expensive for a country town, but on par with the rest of the accommodation in this tourist area.

  • Liked — location - right in the main street
  • Disliked — no bathroom door!
