If you like to have something dfferent than the average lunch menu then give the Village Larder a try. Found it to have varied menu which was exciting and the taste was excellent.

“Mixed experiences”
Reviewed January 13, 2013

There was a time when I would have said that the Larder was out and out the best cafe in Woodend.

Unfortunately a few bad experiences have changed my thinking. They still have very good coffee with an interesting, but perhaps too overcomplicated menu.

The negatives - Slightly overpriced, the meals are way too fancy and I feel should stripped back to basic good quality food. But that's just me, some people love a good fancy food wank.
Too cramped, not enough space to dine comfortably. Service can be very slow on busy mornings (I once waited 40min for a takeaway coffee)

Overall, a good option, but the good experiences have been outweighed by the bad.

“Awesome breakfasts!!!”
Reviewed October 21, 2012 via mobile

There isn't a thing on the breakfast menu I wouldn't want to eat and the Bloody Marys were spot on! A busy little spot so don't expect the food to appear in a hurry, well worth the wait though!

“THE VILLAGE LARDER”
Reviewed October 18, 2012

Given that The Village Larder won several awards last year for excellence, I was disappointed when I went there. The coffee was ok but nothing to write home about. There was little left in the larder - just a few loaves of bread. Service was not fantastic either.

“Simply, the best Cafe in Woodend if not the Ranges! Gluten Free + Free WIFI”
Reviewed August 24, 2012

Village Larder is the cafe you "wish to happen upon" whilst on weekend in the Ranges and when you find it, your wish you didn't have to leave!

Whilst presenting as a Cafe it offers Restaurant quality, variety, and pure deliciousness. The Head Chef Marika and Barista Ben are the owners and their attention to detail is everywhere. Hence in their first year they scoped the regional Business Awards taking Best New Business, Best Cafe and then Overall Best Business Award. Not an easy task in the Foodie Hotspot of the Macedon Ranges.

But lets talk the food:

The Coffee is very good and I drink long black so if the crema is not strong, it goes back. Never and issue here. Everything is made on the premises including jams, chutneys, all except the Bread which is La Madre. All they offer Gluten Free and Vego options.

On this Saturday morning pic no 2 & 3 shows: Coffee Scrolls, Cheddar Cheeses Twistie, Bacon and Egg Pie, Vegie Rice Pic (GF) Calebaut Chocolate Brownie, Rhubarb Flan, Passionfruit Cheesecake Slice, Fruit Scones served with home made jam and cream, and Gluten Free (yes always gluten Free) Muffins, this morning's flavour being Apple and Date , the variety changes daily. Prices range form $3 to $7.50.

For breakfast you step up above average in their Signature Bacon and Egg Toast made with house chutney and local bacon, Honey Roasted Seed and Oat Granola with Greek yoghurt and Orchard Fruits, Lentils with Preserved Sausage and Garlic rubbed Sourdough, a Baked Beans featuring Piper St Food Co. Chorizo and Goats Cheese and my personal favourite the classic Croque Madame: Ham and Cheese topped with Fried Egg & Onion Marmalade (pc 1) and yes, you can replace all bread with Gluten Free. Prices $9 to $17. Note: Breakfast ends 11am sharp with lunch starting from 12pm.

Lunch menu changes daily and can be as simple as Slow Roasted Jerusalem Artichoke Soup or as elaborate as Deboned Quail stuffed with rice, herbs and local cheeses or Home Made Bagel , with Trout Gravalx & Cream Cheese. Regulars like the Pork Ciabatta Rolls and are delicious. There is always a Vego Options or two.

They close at 4pm (again sharp) and open for Dinner ONLY Saturday night where it steps ups a notch again and bookings are recommended if you don't want to be disappointed.

The coffee and everything can be takeaway. I have seen bikers pull up and order a dozen bacon and eggs toasties to go!

Lastly, they welcome kids with a toy box and books, have complimentary newspaper and local magazines and FREE Wi Fi so if the little ones get bored you fire up the iPad and relax.

Downsides: When the first opened service was patchy but now more than 2 years old it is a well oiled machine. They really do stop breakkie at 11am sharp , so don't expect 11:01am to be OK. Prices are not budget so it you want a cheap coffee and cake try Bourkies Bakery for the famous vanilla slices. You can sit outside but other than summer it is too cold but that is Woodend. Enjoy!
