It isn't often that we have an opportunity to meet someone who worked during the mining days in 1950s and 1960s - our tour guide at 83 was amazing. Having travelled to Australia in his late teens he spent his early working career underground in these mines. Now working with the local community he and a group of volunteers tend to the mines every Tuesday night to keeping them in working order so that we, the tourist, can walk 1km in underground tunnels and the travel up on the old mining tracks. It is well worth the entry fee and experience every day at 11.30am or 2pm

We visited here recently and thoroughly enjoyed the service and experience. Very friendly ladies at counter and very helpful. Also the ladies in the Cafe, who we had a good chat to. Great service from them.

We had booked the 2pm tour. And as it was about 1pm when we arrived, we had plenty of time to investigate the grounds. From visiting "cobber" the Pit Pony to looking around the various displays they have relating to the Mine, everything was very interesting and well set up. The grounds are kept in immaculate condition. There was also a short video of the history of the mine in a small cinema area.

Just before 2pm we went to meet the tour guide at the cafe, where a family were also waiting. A lady came to ask if we minded waiting a few minutes for a lady who had missed the tour the day before and was on her way. We all agreed this would be ok. Well she arrived 25 minutes later (why be so late, when you missed it the previous day and knew time you had to be there, I do not know). Her daughter aged 15 came shrieking out to greet everyone, very over the top as none of us knew her! Then she announces to the guide "I love you, thank you for waiting". More loud and irritating behaviour carried on for quite some time, silly comments while going down the mine, bordering on stupidity. I can tell you this was very irritating.
But thankfully the tour was fantastic and we really enjoyed it. It takes about a hour, so you have plenty of time to look around various areas of the mine and are told the history of it. Our guide was a retired gentleman who volunteered his time as a guide. His knowledge was good and he told many tales of the history of the area and the mine.
You walk down the mine, carefully in places as it can be slightly slippery. But are winched up in a type of cart when you return to another exit. Helmets are suppled.

Very interesting tour and well worth the visit. I would recommend this tour to all ages.

Visited with our 3 boys (3,6,9) and there really was something for all of them. Loads of information displayed in ways to keep the kids interested. Loved feeding 'Cobber' the pony and climbing on the old steam train. Grounds are beautifully maintained and staff/volunteers were very nice and helpful. Didn't have time to do the mine tour so our day out cost us only what we spent at the cafe. Highly recommended!

Ron gave a great tour, very informative, really knew his stuff. Dave was very good as well. After he winched us back up he told us all about the winching machinery. He and Ron then told us more about the history of the town and it's people. You have to do this tour!!

My family and I visited the State Coal Mine today and were treated to a wonderful tour run by Steve. Steve is a volunteer who had been called in on his day off to do a special tour which suited us as we had missed the usual tour at 2pm and we were able to "gatecrash" the special tour.. You could tell he loved doing the tours and had some very entertaining stories that kept us all captivated. Wear good shoes, bit slippery at times! Staff in coffee shop just as friendly. Very enjoyable afternoon out with many thanks to Steve who made our day.
