Owner description: The spectacular 40-minute trip on the Queenscliff Sorrento Ferry Service links Melbourne’s most magnificent coastal regions: the Bellarine Peninsula and Mornington Peninsula. Both destinations have a vast number of attractions to explore. Then, from Sorrento on the Mornington Peninsula, it’s a leisurely 2-hour scenic drive to Phillip Island and the famous Penguin Parade. From Queenscliff on the Bellarine Peninsula, you’re very close to the glorious Great Ocean Road.Stroll on board as a passenger or bring your car – it’s the fast and environmentally friendly alternative to the drive of more than 200 km through the city from one peninsula to the other. All weather, hourly crossings, 7 Days…Two specially designed all-weather 60-metre ferries depart from both destinations on the hour, every hour, 7am to 6pm daily. Enjoy easy drive on/drive off facilities, spacious comfortable lounges with full-length windows, a tempting cafe and plenty of deck space. There are ever-changing sights – watch out for dolphins, whales in winter and enormous ships as you breathe incredibly fresh air.Arriving at Sorrento, you’ll have a perfect view of multi-million dollar mansions sitting atop cliffs, tiny coves filled with boats, the beautiful foreshore and old limestone buildings.Queenscliff is dominated by the fascinating 1860s Fort Queenscliff, but has many gracious old buildings including grand historic hotels and guesthouses. The specially designed all weather ferries have easy drive on/drive off facilities, no turning required.Easy and convenient.

Whilst getting from one side of Port Phillip Bay to the the other is convenient and a time saver by taking the ferry, the cost is relatively high for the short trip if you take your car.
The alternative driving around the bay, however, will take around two and a half hours.

I booked the 'high tea on the high seas' on the Searoad Ferry from Sorrento to Queenscliff as a surprise for hubby on Sunday 14 October. What a lovely time we had, sitting inside right at the front of the ferry, at a table set with a linen cloth and a tiered cake stand full of delectable goodies. Not forgetting the freshly baked scones, of course! We enjoyed a glass of sparkling wine to begin with (quality teas and coffee are also available) and indulged in locally produced sweet and savoury treats as we sailed towards Queenscliff. Although we couldn't disembark with the other passengers, we enjoyed a stroll on the deck as the new passengers and vehicles came onboard. The return journey was just as pleasant - we could have been on an ocean cruise! Staff were friendly and obliging from the minute we arrived at the terminal and waited on us attentively and courteously throughout the journey. Highly recommended for locals and visitors alike. We both had a lovely time and would happily return again.

We used this ferry to travel between Sorrento and Queenscliff. Very efficient with reasonably priced online booking. The boarding of vehicles was easy with adequate staff to give directions. Great views from the passenger decks which included a well stocked snack bar. The highlight of the trip was a pod of dolphins folling the vessel for almost half of the 40 minute trip.

Let's be honest it is not cheap if you are a regular, but it really is something you gotta do. Great views of Sorrento and Portsea, the Rip, mud island and Queenscliff from the water. A very pleasant journey, even when the weather is awful. Often have dolphins surfing the bow wave and occasionally whales spotted. When this happens the ship will be slowed or veer off course a little to get a peek. Generally the captain will give way to the oil tankers and freight ships, but seeing them "close" is an experience. I would have done the journey nearly a couple of hundred times and it is always relaxing. welcoming and enjoyable. Sometimes it is exhilarating. The crew can be stern but are normally good fun. If you have a choice and you get the chance, do it.
