Review of Stanton and Killeen Wines

Stanton and Killeen Wines
Ranked #7 of 23 things to do in Rutherglen

Attraction details
Owner description: Gold lured Timothy Stanton and his family to Rutherglen in the 1860s but he soon turned his attention to making fortifieds for Rutherglen's growing population. The two families joined together when Norman Killeen married fourth generation Jack Stanton's daughter, Joan, and the last few decades have seen Stanton and Killeen Wines grow to be a pre-eminent producer of luscious fortifieds, Vintage Port and big reds. As one of the few Australian wineries to have seven generations working in the business, S&K have their eyes firmly on the future, planting Iberian varieties best suited to Rutherglen's climate. A traditional, family owned winery with a contemporary touch.

“Loved It!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 18, 2013

We stayed at Must Love Dogs B & B that recommended Stanton & Killen Wines as a dog friendly winery as we were travelling with our puppies. Beautiful winery that did welcome our dogs. Hubby bought lots of lovely wine and we will return. Very friendly service and great wine.

“Nice estate”

I visited here with a friend. I was not a massive fan of the wines here, but it does have a large estate that has a nice aspect.

Hi Kirstie976, thanks for taking the time to review S&K and looking to the positive side of your visit, namely the lovely aspect we have here. When you tasted our wines in 2013, you may have been trying our wines from the cooler, lighter years of 2010-2012. We hope to see you at S&K again in the future as we have the 2013 reds on tasting which are more more traditional in style with big, Rutherglen fruit flavours. We also have some exciting wines in the pipeline from our existing and new plantings of Portuguese grape varieties. All the best, Natasha Killeen.

“Good, not great”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 26, 2013

Wine likes/dislikes are always very personal. My wife and I were not too impressed, compared to some wines from other producers, but that is not to sat you should not visit S and K.

Hey Richard T, I appreciate you taking the time to review S&K. Like my response to Kirstie976 above, I hope to see you at S&K again in the future as we have some really good wine on tasting at the moment including The Prince Reserva 2013 which recently won a gold medal at the Boutique Wine Awards (and was only 0.5 points behind the trophy winning wine). Our new winemaker, Andrew Drumm, is excited about the parcels of fruit that we picked from the 2015 vintage so keep an eye out for those to be released. Cheers, Natasha Killeen.

“Loved it - the real deal”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 29, 2013

Stanton and Killeen is somewhere you must visit on your trip to Rutherglen. The winemaker (Simon) was very very helpful and we enjoyed hearing about the different varieties, how they are made and the history. We visited a number of wineries in the area and the experience was excellent at all of them. What I particularly loved about this one was the history, the rustic nature of the place and talking to the person who actually makes the wine. Their fortified are sensational!

“Easter way to busy”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 1, 2013

Go off peak, we were here at Easter and it was way to busy. Only tried their able wines, did not get the chance to talk to staff as they were just going up and down the bar refilling glasses. Need to go back off peak

Hi marsy007,
We're sorry you didn't have a positive experience at S&K. The 2013 Easter break took us quite by surprise as it was one of Rutherglen's biggest in a few years. Because of your comment, we made sure we put on extra staff during Easter this year, so thanks for the feedback!. Next time you're in town, let me know and we will give you a tour of the winery.
Cheers, Natasha Killeen
