quite a charming looking place fom the outside. Our room was plenty big enough for the two of us. Although, like someone else said, it was quite dark during the day. There was plenty of tea and coffee but no milk in the fridge. The fridge hadn't been cleaned after the previous occupants; who had left a container of ice cream that melted and dripped. Both nights there were private functions which went quite late and were noisy. I don't think it's right that a guest house should host private functions. Guests like to stay in places that a peaceful, not rowdy. The restaurant was booked out for the function. So even if we did want to eat there, we couldn't have. Anyway, the staff were excellent - friendly, helpful and cheerful. The breakfast was delicious. Athelstane house is in a fantastic location within walking distance to town.

Room Tip: be aware of room 9 - there is a deck outside the bedroom window and if there is a function on people...

This place is an absolute gem. Situated just off the main street, it is a small hotel with a really special feel. The rooms are all ensuite and comfy. The small bar has a very good winelist and the coffee and food are very very good - the mushrooms on toast for breaky - wow. The owners and staff are really friendly and helpful which really adds to the great feel of the place. Book while you can as i'm sure when word gets around this place will take off big time.

Room Tip: Get a balcony room if you can

This accommodation is worthy of serious consideration, Staff are Excellent and the Manager is one of the best and will do anything for you. The rooms are not 5 star but very comfortable and the dining and outside areas are fantastic. Food is so fresh and tasty and service is superb.
I will stay at Athelstane House again and again and looking forward to my next stay.

While staying with family in Queenscliff over the New Year period, we were taken to Athelstane for breakfast which was superb - from the fabulous coffee to the breakfast itself (mushrooms in cream on sour dough, a must have!) while sitting outside on the deck, the service was great and most welcoming.
We returned for an evening meal on two occasions both of which were favourably memorable and there was a great buzz and ambience in the restaurant - love the old vinyl record player.
There are so many delightful places to sit and have a coffee, a drink, a snack or a meal - try the courtyard, it's very Parisian!
If the family ever move - we would definately not only eat and drink at Athelstane, we would stay!
It's a classic boutique hotel.....we will be back.

Excellent value. No complaints. Meet with a friendly face on arrival and that set the standard. All staff were friendly and nothing seemed too much bother. Food was excellent. Room was clean and simple, nothing like a hotel room, which we appreciated.

With fond memories of a fun New Years Eve at Athelstane House, where as a large family group we were so well catered for with pre-dinner drinks and savoury platters, the two of us decided to return recently for a weekend stay. It was the perfect location for us in a beautiful tree-lined street, central to cafes and boutiques, beach and parks, the marina area, heritage home spotting, and even the lovely Swan Bay walking paths. Our room was spotless, simply furnished, light and bright with a spacious bathroom. With the choice of a cooked or continental breakfast included in the room price, plus a complimentary drink voucher each, we felt the rate was very reasonable. Our two breakfasts and one evening dinner were of a high standard, delicious and well presented. Coffee was excellent and made with passion! There were several spots to relax with a book and sip on a cool drink, and we found the shady garden a lovely spot to escape the heat. It was obvious that this is a popular place to be on a weekend, with both visitors and locals enjoying the grounds, deck and verandahs. With a good degree of past experience in larger more luxurious hotels, where often the lack of friendly service leaves one feeling flat and dissatisfied, we cannot speak highly enough of the wonderful service at this delightful boutique hotel. A genuine interest in providing the best service possible and making guests feel comfortable, in fact spoilt, was a real highlight and credit to managers and staff. We left with happy memories of a pleasant weekend spent in a charming little hotel in a heritage village, and look forward to our next visit to Athelstane.

Room Tip: We liked our upstairs room but would book ahead for a room with a balcony or courtyard next time.

We visited Queenscliff for its touch of days gone by. Athelstane in one form or another is 100 years old but delightfully but discretely modernised . Check their web site for room options-we chose #6 at the rear with a little dedicated balcony. All guests can use the larger front balcony plus well stocked reading room. Staff extremely courteous. The only downside would be for guests with limited mobility-the stairs are quite steep and narrow. Several intimate eating nooks for breakfast or that late pm drink.
