Having decided to venture to Queenscliff for New Year to stay in the historically listed, Seaview House, we had a few expectations of what to expect from accommodation in such an old building. One of the first things we pack is an extension powerboard - power points understandably weren't big back in the 1800s, so you always expect to find them in limited number and not always where you want them to plug-in you iPad, iPone and camera battery chargers. Although our Premier Room with ensuite was very comfortable, the powerboard came into its own after after several days of phone, camera and computer use. We are always drawn-in by the history of buildings and the people who may have inhabited the building in its hay-day. To our surprise the Seaview had started life as a grocery store and become a Coffee House in the late 1800s (see photo from early 1900s) during the temperance period. Having stayed in other period style buildings, we were pleasantly surprised to find a bright and well equipped bathroom - the hot shower was difficult to drag yousrself out of in the mornings - and tea & coffee making facilities in the bedroom. Another word of advice when looking to make a coffee - you wont find the jug in the bedroom - it's in the vanity under the basin in the bathroom along with an extension lead to get to the nearest powerpoint on the opposite wall. That aside, the bed was extremely comfortable and we had two really restful nights - somewhat unusual since the second night was New Year's Eve! When packing for you stay I would advise not to over pack as the journey to the rooms can be quite a journey, including stairs and long narrow corridors. The small lounge on the first floor led onto the balcony and we spent some time watching the events unfold in the busy Hesse Street below while having a quiet drink with our feet up. Being New Year and not having off-street parking, once having obtained a parking space close to the front door, we were reluctant to do much driving for fear of not being able to get a park that close again - an unwarranted concern except for a few hours over our stay. The proprietors were very friendly and the room service was carried out with care and concern for maintaining clean, fresh linen and bathroom supplies each day. Overall, although we have stayed in more modern hotels with all the modern creature comforts, we enjoyed our time at the Seaview, and as long as you go with these hints in mind you will to.

Room Tip: "Bring an extension powerboard if you have to recharge appliances" "Look for the hotwater jug in the bathroom vanity" "No off-street parking - so park close as you can get to front door"

This traditional B&B matches Queenscliff perfectly: once grand but now a little frayed around the edges. As someone mentioned below, it's like staying at your nan's house, but in a good way. For British people, think Margate in the 80's. It's not what you'd call modern, so if you're after gleaming white walls and fancy fittings and minimalist interior design, I'd suggest this wouldn't be the place for you, but then that's not the point of visiting a place like Queenscliff.

We had nice well appointed rooms, a little more chintzy than my taste but nothing outrageous. The place is clean and comfortable, and the two guest lounges are very pleasant.

We were greeted by Helen, the landlady, a little abruptly but I think that was more to do with us arriving as she was having dinner! She's very straightforward and to the point, and once we'd got over that first impression she was extremely helpful and efficient, even to the extent of calling round to find out which restaurants were open and had space for our dinner reservation. She was happy to talk about the area and recommend sites to see. It's obviously a small community and they all know each other. Again, in a good way.

Don't be mislead by the name, there isn't a seaview unless you go onto the communal balcony, go right to the end, stand on tiptoes, wait for the wind to blow a tree out of the way and squint...

Room Tip: After going on a midnight hunt to find an alarm clock that was going off somewhere, I saw a good selection of rooms - they all look very similar. The rooms to the inside of the place overlook a large skylight over the main dinning room and there's not great noise separation so, conversely, if the place is busy and you want a quieter night you'd be better off with an outside facing room.

We are very pleased you enjoyed your stay at Seaview House and thank you so much for providing a lovely & very entertaining review.

Seaview House was built in 1880 and as such is very in-keeping with the historical township of Queenscliff; we take great pride in maintaining very high standards of hospitality and providing clean, comfortable rooms & little extra touches for our guests; like dinner reservations, tips on local attractions and to assist where we can.

In 1880 when Seaview was first built - as a coffee palace and trading as Seaview House - they had a great view of the sea until they built a church across the road.....so now we have sea views only from one guest room and the balcony - if you stand on tip toe!

Many thanks,

Front Office Manager

My first time staying at a bed and breakfast, usually it's hotels/motels and apartments. Loved it and has made me reconsider future bookings. It's cosy and personal. Management looked after me over my birthday weekend. I felt spoilt :) room 7 is lovely. Had my own private balcony and ensuite with bath. Next to the shops and cafes (opposite the gourmet chocolate shop) thanks Queenscliff and Seaview house :)

Room Tip: Room 7 and room 2 was great!!!

Bought 2 nights stay through Cudo, was offered a very ordinary room or spend an extra $20 night for a half decent room as an up grade. I thought this was a bit misleading knowing nobody would want the rooms on offer, also there was NO seaview, the only plus was an early check in & late check out.

Thanks for your review of Seaview House.

We were sorry to hear that you found your room ordinary - it was a Premier Queen room you had - and if our Deluxe Suite with balcony & clawfoot bath is available we do give our guests the option of upgrading to the Suite for an extra $20 per night; as we did for you.

We are pleased you took advantage of and enjoyed the early check-in and late check-out option offered to you.

My husband and I stayed at Seaview House on the 16th October, 2012 and we thoroughly enjoyed out two night stay. We used our Cudo voucher and certainly got our money's worth. The owner Helen was very friendly and helpful and booked us into a restaurant for dinner. Our room was very comfy and spotlessly clean. Very quiet with comfortable lounges (with gas fire) and complimentary coffee, etc.

Room Tip: We were on the side of the house which was quiet.
