“Melbourne Cup Camping”
Reviewed November 7, 2012

Imagine organising a camping trip for 12 families, it wasn't easy at all. Luckily we were referred by friends to get in contact with Dean. He was the most helpful and wonderful person to deal with. Dean was very flexible and always try to accomodate the best he could. He totally understand the difficulties in organising such a big event and would always think of the best way to assist with checking in and all enquiries.

The camping facility is very good, it is clean and the kids love the Jumping Pillow. Some of the roads are a bit rough, probably not so suitable for kids to bike or scooter. But overall, we all had lots of fun! Thank you, Dean and Sarah!

We've often stayed at the GORTP after riding the GOR; Dean and Sarah are always friendly, and the accommodation is comfortable and clean after a long ride. Perfectly placed for a ride from Melbourne, with a decent shop in Peterborough. If you like birds there are a heap of terns, gannets and egrets in the estuary. If the weather's bad you can walk along the top of the cliffs for hours; it really doesn't get much better.

We stayed here for 1 night in the river view cabin number 11. This turned out to be an excellent pick. The cabin was very new and in excellent condition with direct access to the river and the beach. The cabin is extremely well stocked and the owners very friendly. Out of the 3 caravan parks we stayed at on the Great Ocean Road, this was the best run and the cleanest. Although we did not use the common cooking facilities, they were extra clean and a nice place to hang out. The site also has a huge trampoline for children. Peterborough is a very small village with only 180 inhabitants and can feel a little empty in spring. It only has a few places to eat, but Port Campbell down the road has plenty restaurants. A good place to get away from it all and to feel at one with nature. The owners are from Melbourne and quite clearly brought a little style and comfort to their caravan park. Pick cabin 11 and you cannot go wrong!

Hi Poessing from Singapore!
Thanks for your lovely review of our Park. We agree with you that our new Riverfront Cabin is a great place to relax, unwind and enjoy the peacefulness of our seaside town. Perhaps on your next trip “Downunder” you can stay a few more days and explore our wonderful region – it not only offers the stunning coastal lookouts and walks that we are world famous for, but has award winning cheese factories, a distillery, winery and chocolate factory......mmmmm!! Or simply take the time to relax with a book and a fishing rod on the banks of the Curdies River!
Happy travels & thanks again!

Booked a 2 night stay in the 2 bedroom deluxe cabin... left a day early.

Staff were friendly, park facilities are ok. But not much really to do in the township especially when its awful weather like what we had.

I don't know when the floor of the cabin had been cleaned last because we all had dirty feet after only 5 minutes, which made me think how was the rest of the cabin cleaned...

The staff recommended going across the road to the pub - awful food and service.

Was very happy to leave a day early - even if it meant them not giving us a refund (they refused). We accidentally left some items behind.. you think we would've received a call to let us know as we would've paid for postage, we didn't.

Hi Sonlou73
Thanks for taking the time to review our Park and our apologies for taking so long to respond. We appreciate all feedback in order to continually improve our Park and make our guests more comfortable during their stay. It is indeed unfortunate that your review was made almost one year after your departure, as it would have helped us track down and rectify problems if we were made aware of them earlier.
There are a number of points you’ve made that we’d like to address – some within our control, and others not!! Firstly, whilst we would love to have a control dial to change the weather, unfortunately we don’t! August is one of the coldest and windiest months in Victoria, but it is winter! Having said that, it provides some of the most spectacular viewing at the famous coastal lookouts, including the 12 Apostles and Loch Ard Gorge, with huge seas and fabulous cloud formations. Secondly, whilst we advise guests of their dining options in town, we never recommend an establishment, and it would not be fair of us to comment on the food or service you received there.
However, we are responsible for what happens in our Park, and would like to address your comments. We were most surprised that you believe the cleanliness of your cabin was not up to standard. We have owned the Park for 9 years and always strive to provide clean facilities. In fact, we regularly receive positive feedback regarding the cleanliness of our cabins and amenities, as you will see from other Tripadvisor reviews of our Park. Regarding refunds for early departures, it is clearly stated on our Park Receipts, within the Compendiums in our cabins and on our website (www.gortp.com.au) that we do not offer refunds for early departures. This policy is no different to the majority of other accommodation providers. Lastly, regarding the items you left behind, we do keep lost property for 6 months, and would have gladly returned them to you should you have contacted us.
Thanks again for your comments Sonlou73.

All those visitors that drive the Great Ocean Road and turn back towards Melbourne after Port Campbell make a real mistake. The Twelve Apostles may be the international icon, but it’s the next 20 kilometres that go on and deliver that rugged shipwreck coast that makes for the best coastal walks and sunset photos. Peterborough is a classic spot to stop for those that like their townships deliberately rooted in the 50s. The people are totally chilled out - probably all the fishing and wild salt laden winds. But in this time warped township is an accommodation option whose hosts provide authenticity, friendliness and professionalism. They are my local visitor information service - take the time to strike a conversation; tell them what you are looking for, and they will help you find it. Their latest cabin overlooks the river mouth and has been lifted to capture the views and sounds of the inlet. I walk in the morning, read and hang out on my cabin veranda in the afternoon, and then hit the coast for the potential light show that’s sunset. The Great Ocean Road is at it’s most raw state here, but the hosts are totally polished.

Room Tip: Take time to talk with the hosts about your needs and spend a little more for the best cabin.

We only stayed for one night, but it was amazing!
We hadn't planned to drive that far, but as it was Easter all of the camp parks we drove by were already completely full. One offered us a site for 60 bucks, but the receptionist told us to try it at Petersborough. Luckily we did so, and found a wonderful tourist park :)

An ideal spot for birdwatching - we had a campervan site at the river's edge and put our table and chairs by the water to eat breakfast admiring the pelicans. Lovely friendly hosts, spotless ablution blocks with flowers on the sinks and bathmats for use in the showers!! Would defintely make a point of stopping here again.
