“Beautiful surrounds”
Reviewed August 5, 2012

My husband and I stayed at Lochiel for a couple of nights in a tri level cottage. What stood out immediately were the superb views from the cottage. All the cottages are surrounded by the magnificent forest. What is also good is the convenient location. The cottages are located within walking distance to the Olinda shops. Our cottage was fully self contained, had a large bathroom with a spa, and also had central heating and a canara which were both convenient for this time of year.

Also left for us were discount meal vouchers for the Ranges restaurant down the road ($30 off breakfast and 20% off dinner) which was a nice addition to our stay. The only let down I would say is that there was very little information provided on things to do in the area. There was a booklet for us to read in the cottage however it was not very detailed. We then asked a local where the nearest information centre was and was told there wasn’t one in the area. We ended up driving to the Healesville as we recalled one there however they could not help as they catered to the Yarra Valley region only. They did tell us however that there was one in Belgrave in which is the one that we should have gone to… lesson now learned. Our recommendation would be to plan your visit before arrival.

Overall it was a lovely stay and very relaxing.

Certainly one of the most romantic cosy places we've ever stayed. We live 10 mins away and still come here to get away (can you believe it??)
Fully servicable kitchen and a bathroom with a lovely corner spa, wood fire coonara style and a plenty of wood!!!! We had vouchers supplied for breakfast and dinner and the hosts even dropped us off due to rain. The creature comforts were great, leather lounge cushions stereo and dvd. The views into the bush were spectacular and with the fog rolling around just perfect. Privacy assured, and the ability to grab some local stuff at the olinda pantry and the bottle-o next door made for a splendid cosy cuddly afternoon!!!!

We stayed in a tri level cottage for 2 nights. The bed was amazingly comfy, and the heating, whether the central heating or the wood fire, kept us nice and warm, even though it was fairly chilly outside.
I wasn't wowed when I first saw them, but inside is a different story. The bathroom is great, the spa that fits 2 was a great relaxer.
The lounge room was set out well, with a couch facing the wood fire, and a tv for the nights just wanting to stay in.
We got vouchers for breakfast at Ranges, we ate there both mornings, and we really enjoyed them.
We will definitely stay here again.

Lochiel Cottage

We stayed in the original Lochiel Cottage for 4 nights during March 2012.
Having stayed for a few nights a couple of years ago in this cottage we had fond memories and wanted to relive the experience. Olinda is a lovely village and the location of the cottage is very convenient – just a short walk over the road to Ranges for breakfast and to the shops. A daily breakfast voucher for $30 at Ranges café was included in the tariff. The food at Ranges is nice with a good selection to choose from. We found the service a lot better during the weekday than on the weekend when they are a lot busier. The cottage is close to the road but we never noticed excessive road noise so can’t say that was an issue at all. Yes, when a group of 50 motor bikes or a car club cruises past you can hear them, but neither of those are all day every day. The deck area at the back of the cottage overlooks a sloping yard with tall trees and on our first night my husband saw a deer and fawn in the backyard! That was unexpected! We later read that deer in the Dandenongs are a pest but it sure was cool to see them grazing in the garden. Nip in the air, green everywhere, pine trees and deer – just like being in a winter Christmas scene!

While the cottage was still lovely it would have been better if the central heating was working. The owners had placed a few portable heating units around the cottage, but one of these would only run when tilted on an angle against the wall and even then would still cut in and out. This wasn’t too much of an issue in March but come winter it might be a different story so hopefully the central heating will be fixed by then.

Top picks: In Olinda visit the Turkish shop at the back (behind the shops on the main street). It’s filled with the most amazing and colourful decorated pottery. Nearby Olinda Falls makes a pleasant short walk and there’s a good chance of seeing a lyre bird or black wallaby there. I’ve seen both at these falls over the years, with lyre birds spotted 3 out of 4 visits.

Came up from Sydney to spend some time in this winter wonderland. Lochiel is a truly enchanting place. Spotless, comfortable and handy to great eateries in Olinda. EVERY window had a magnificent framed view of our environment. So quiet and relaxing. Nothing was a problem for our helpful hosts. Highly recommended.

My partner and I stayed at Treetops in Olinda (Lochiel luxury accomodation) last weekend as part of a weekend in the mountains for our anniversary and loved this cute little cottage. We stayed in the one story cottage but there are three level cottages as well. They are all close together so don't go there for total privacy although we didn't see anyone for our one night. When we arrived, the key was in the door and the room was warm and inviting, ready to go. Self contained, well fitted out and a balcony looking over the trees with an open fire was just beautiful. The cottage was close to the main road unfortunately so alot of traffic noise on the weekends.
The spa was great, very clean room and big floor to ceiling windows for your vista! Comfy big bed and a great lounge in front of the open fire, plenty of wood and we were set. Breakfast voucher included for the local cafe -$30 in total which was enough and we went to the same cafe the night before - bad service, great food.
Loved this place and very reasonably priced so will be back for sure - a great location up in the Dandenongs for a short break especially in the winter for romance, good food, good wine and an open fire :)
