Summary – clean, friendly, busy and the meal was faultless.
They have a fabulous chef at the Maldon Hotel who can turn an old traditional meal into a pure delight. Feeling tired, I chose the specials for the day - corned beef and rice pudding. Often in the Wimmera and Mallee, one finds pub kitchens churn out Corned Beef which is tough, stringy and bland. Therefore, as I waited for my meal, I was not expecting anything too inspiring. One mouthful revealed that I was about to consume Corned Beef as it SHOULD be cooked. It was absolutely delicious. The local organic meat was tender and had been given a full flavour by being cooked to a very good traditional recipe – one my grandmother would be proud of... The mashed potatoes were smooth and plentiful and rather than cabbage, were served with al-dente steamed vegetables. The rice pudding included marinated raisins and really met the description of being “comfort food”. Yummo!
What a very pleasant surprise it was to find that The Maldon Hotel has a chef who really cares about the food he is presenting!

The prices here were cheaper than the competition and it seemed like a good deal. They had a reasonable selection of beers on tap including Brookes Beer, a local beer from Bendigo.
The dining/bistro area was open plan and rather charmless, with plastic/metal chairs and tables reasonably close together.
Service was pleasant, and our food was brought out within a reasonable time. Unfortunately I was a little disappointed with the quality of the food, especially for a place that makes a point of saying their meat is organic etc. That may be the case, I don't know as we didn't have any beef or lamb. Nevertheless the "Fishermans Basket" was a bit of a mixed bag. The fish was fresh and good, while the crumbed prawns and scallops weren't particularly high quality, and the "squid" wasn't actually squid. They were formed crumbed rings of aerated seafood extender, and should not be being advertised as "squid". Perhaps the chef felt bad about dishing these out as I had a seafood stick included as extra with my meal. I'd rather just have real squid.
Side salad was OK - pretty standard with not much dressing.
The Chicken Parmigiana had no ham as part of the topping. To those who are fussy and appreciate a good pub-style chicken parma, need I say more?!?!
Beef burgers do not include beetroot.

The Maldon Hotel offers good value dining, with a discounted weekday lunch offering. I should have tried something off the specials board as the meals on there seemed a bit more decent. If you're after high quality food with a cosy country pub environment, this probably doesn't fit the bill. If you don't mind a cheap eat in a place reminiscent of a canteen or mess hall then give this place a go. It wasn't horrible, but I expected better.
