“Nostalgia buffs paradise”

Well preserved and appropriately (self) titled as Victoria's first "Notable Town'. Half hour's drive South worthy to appreciate a bygone era.

“Cafe and dining delights”
Reviewed October 27, 2011

After exploring on foot, all that Maldon has to offer, it was great to find plenty of choices for coffee, lunch and dinner.

“Step back in time!!”
Reviewed October 20, 2011

A visit to Maldon is to step back in time to a lost Australia, the High street in lined by fantastic old shops, walk in the shade provided by the shop front verandahs and just take in the old town feeling, browse through the antique shops and just relax!

“A step back in time”
Reviewed December 13, 2009

was in Maldon over the weekend. Was a great stop on the road from Bendigo to Castlemaine.

Its atmosphere feels like a trip to Sovereign Hill, without the enterance fees, horse drawn carriages and uniforms :) It was a great stop, and has been preserved so well. Great shops and cafes are located in the main street. The train trip is definatelty something I will look at doing sometime in the future if I can, as the region between Maldon and Castlemaine is very nice forest.

If you want to experience a historic town in your travels in Australia, give this region and this town a go.

“History and heritage”
Reviewed May 11, 2008

Maldon was the first Victorian town to be classified by the National Trust of Australia (Victoria) as a 'Notable Town' in 1970.

It shows.

Main Street is atmospheric.

Many weatherboard shops remain, intelligently protected from the hot Australian summer sun by verandahs.

Some buildings are brick but at least 100 years old.

There is a good range of shops, from a small yet good IGA supermarket to a lovely small bakery in a small brick building, an atmospheric brick pub and a range of bed and breakfasts in which to stay.

The Victorian Goldfields Railway is a short walk away from where a steam train to the equally historic but much larger Castlemaine departs on weekends, public holidays, Wednesdays and some school holidays.

This town is not large, but is certainly worth a visit, and Main Street is naturally the centre of actvity.
