“What an idyllic retreat”

What a beautiful house and friendly attentive hosts. The rooms were spacious and comfortable with the cooked breakfast just yummy. Our only complaint is there was so much bird activity during breakfast that it took us until 11 am each day to go and explore the Yarra Valley because we were so engrossed. Toby, Deanne and (Irish staff ) could not have been more accommodating.

Strathvea turned out to be even better and more beautiful than the photos online conveyed. We decided to stay an extra day after arriving as it was too nice to leave after only one night.

Everything about the experience was relaxing and pleasant. I loved our heritage bedroom with dark wood panel walls and tasteful deco/nouveau era furnishings. The semi private deck is a nice addition to the room, which looked out towards the forest.

The highlights of our stay were watching the many different colourful birds, (including peacocks, cockatoos, rosellas, etc), borrowing interesting books from the ample collection in the library/reading room, sitting down to a delicious three-course breakfast each morning in the elegant dining room (served with beautiful antique silverware and attention to detail by friendly staff), and drinking biodynamic wine in the afternoon sun.

One thing to note in advance is that there's no restaurant or guest cooking facilities on the property so you'll need to bring snacks or head out for meals. Healesville and Toolangi are the nearest locations for restaurants.

The owners, Deanne and Toby, were absolutely lovely and although frequently busy running the guesthouse, were happy to chat and give advice about the best nature walks and restaurants in the area. I thoroughly recommend Strathvea to anyone who wants to enjoy nature in a beautiful and peaceful historical setting. So much better than a modern hotel!

Room Tip: The heritage rooms with tasteful renovations are in keeping with the original 1920s style of the pro...

The drive up Myers Creek Road is a precursor to the oasis that is Stravthea. We have stayed there previously and enjoyed the country ambience immensely. We will be back in two weeks to experience the exceptional hospitality that Toby and Deanne show to all their guests....really friends! When you have a heritage house like this it is a privilege to be a guest.

Room Tip: The Queen ensuites offer all mod cons, but for the real 1920"s experience try the Heritage room...

Strathvea Guest House in the hills and forests above Healesville is in all respects a great experience. The wonderful and beautifully maintained / restored old guest house is a delight. Deanne and her very friendly and efficient staff really made this a memorable stay. The bedrooms were immaculately presented and the older rooms, the dining room, lounge, library etc just ooze history, tradition and atmosphere. Strathvea is situated in magnificent Eucalypt forest with towering mountain ash and stringybarks, and the beautiful gardens are chock full of huge rhododendrons. The breakfast was huge, beautifully cooked and very professionally presented. Hiltons and Hyatts this is not ! For us, we can't wait to come back. Finally, our doubting daughters (15 and 22) loved it too !!!

We're just back from our second weekend away from Strathvea and it wouid be remiss if I didn't report on how wonderful our stay was. As other reviewers have mentioned the genuinely warm welcome you receive from the owners Deanne and Toby set this B&B apart. You are in constant contact with all the homely touches at this 1920's guesthouse. It really feels like you step back in time to a more peaceful restful place. If you want quiet then this is the place to come. The guest house is up near the Toolangi state forest surrounded by bushlife and the birdsong is the only thing that breaks the silence. At breakfast, seed is put out so that the all the local birds feast outside the dining room while we eat the most delicious breakfast. Parrots, cockatoos, currawongs and rosellas all vie for some seed as the Strathvea peacock struts outside like he owns the place.
The breakfast is superb and worth a separate mention. First course is homemade a ceral mix with your choice of yoghurt and homemade poached fruit in variety of spiced syrups, such as cardamon, star anise & cinnamon. The 2nd course is a choice of fried or scrambled free-range eggs, free-range bacon, oven roasted tomatoes and sauteed mushrooms. There was a lot of care on that plate with flavours bursting out of all the ingredients and delicious use of fresh herbs. The toast keeps coming from the kitchen and the plunger coffee and orange juice just finished off a very generous and filling breakfast. So much so we didnt need lunch!
Our room was spotless, modern and warm (it quite cool in the hills around Autumn/Winter) with tasteful antique touches that still transport you to the 1920's. We really enjoy the shared lounge room with open fireplace where we sipped our Yarra Valley wine, played scrabble whilst Billy Halliday sang in the backgorund and engaged in a rare activity called conversation! (if you're coming here to watch TV this isnt the place for you)
Many thanks Toby and Deanne for another restful reviving weekend. We'll be back and hopefully bring friends.

This is a beautiful place full of genuine vintage feel. The atmosphere as you enter is homely and warm putting you instantly at ease and eager to settle in. The room itself was warm, comfortable and full of lovely finishing touches that made time spent there homely and a tonic compared to usual anonymous room feel. The surrounding views are to be seen to be appreciated and well worth the trip alone.

I stayed at Strathvea during autumn, driving up was a really beautiful experience. The environment was so peaceful with these beautiful astonishing trees and forest and when l arrived l recieved a warm welcome by the owners Toby and Deanne. My room overlooked the beautiful garden that was well maintained and it was clean, quiet and spacious. The breakfast was a delight scambled eggs, delicious mushrooms and beautifully cooked tomatoes. Overall the guesthouse itself was full of charm, calm with a rustic old fashion beauty. I really enjoyed my stay it was a piece of heaven where l felt removed from the realities of the rest of the world. Can't wait to return.
