“Dont stay here”
Reviewed May 22, 2011

Dont stay here if you wan't to sleep. I stayed on a Sunday night a couple years ago. Staff members stayed up drinking and talking loudly until 2.30am, directly underneath my room. I had to get up for work at 5.30. Not happy. There are better alternatives

It is a good pub restaurant and popular - good beers and wine list and $35 main course approx. Always has rated well over the past years and continues to be a quality meal . Well worth a visit

Ate there as part of the melbourne food festivals $35 2 course lunch deal. I felt compared to other restaurants doing the same deal they scrimped a bit on their range of offerings and especially the size of servings. Being out of town and a monday maybe they did not want to offer any thing to complicated but does not stack up to the likes of Taxi, Matteos and Florentino's that we also dined at this week on the same $35 deal. a pity as it is a nice trip out to healsville and it is a nice dining room. As we did not eat a'la' carte i don't want to bag it too much, but i think places can do themselves more harm than good when they do promotions like this but fall short of expectations and the competition.

FANTASTIC!

We live in San Francisco, CA, USA and eat out at fine restaurants several times each month. We have a wealth of great chefs here. The porchetta dinner (for 2) served in the dining room of the Healesville Hotel was one of the top 5 meals I have eaten. And, that includes meals at Michelin rated Manressa, Le Bernardin, Commis, Babbo, Camino, Cafe Boloud, Chez Pannise and a host of other excellent restaurants. Quite frankly - what we had was local farm food seasoned lightly, cooked perfectly and served simply. I suggest AU chefs make a trip out to the Healesville Hotel to try this dish. (Served on Wednesday and Thursday nights only.)

The porchetta was spot on, the potatoes, yams, turnips and apples were roasted to perfection as well; the cracklin was yum! The wine list is mainly local with some nice French and Italian options ... we had a French Gamay that was perfect with our meal.

Kudos to James the waiter and Annie the sommelier. Wish we could return - it is a bit of a trip to the Yarra Valley from San Francisco!

I have eaten in the restaurant previously and the food and service was fantastic. On this occassion we ate in the bistro as the restuarant was booked out and it was still nice. The hotel has great charm with beautiful open fire places, which is really cosy on a cold day, and friendly staff. The rooms are basic but clean but if you plan on getting any sleep dont bother checking in here. The noise is unbearable. On a Saturday night you get the music from the pub downstairs until midnight. If anyone gets up to use the shared bathroom you hear the whole place creak, you then get the idiots carrying on in the street until about 3am. And then after a broken sleep with the traffic on the main road you get woken by the cleaners vaccuming and moving chairs in the restaurant at 6am!! Horrible experience. Contemplated sleeping in my car in the carpark had it not been so cold!! And I have stayed in share accommodation and noisey rooms all over the world and this rates as one fo the worst for noise. Not cheap either.

I have stayed & dined at the Healesville 3 times and just eaten there another couple of times over the last 3 years. I have agree with the views of the other reviewers here so far. The dining room, food-wise anyway, is reliably decent, although not quite up to what some in the food-press would have you believe. The rooms are bright & clean, if a bit noisy, and adequate enough for an overnight after a meal. Unfortunately expectations of HH were raised on my very first visit. On this occasion my reservations were honoured and the restaurant staff were really switched on - the young sommelier in particular - and clearly took pride in what they were on about. Had quite a memorable dining experience with US friends who, I know, have sung HH's praises far & wide. Well, my stars must simply have been in alignment that weekend because nothing remotely like it has ever been repeated. Far from it. On two occasions now our accom bookings, confirmed by credit card, have been lost, which state of affairs was met by the HH front desk with an initial shrug. After some negotiation, on one occasion, we were able to stay in-house in downgraded accom and, on the other, we were farmed out to a nearby motel. Both arrangements were accompanied by the maximum to-do possible. A friend, just in the last few weeks, has had exactly the same experience with HH - a lost (confirmed) accom booking met with complete & dismissive denial. You wouldn't think it'd be that hard but I have watched the staff taking bookings and the confusion is no surprise now. I suggest, if you do book, you do it through as many channels as possible. HH's, let's say, haphazard approach observably extends well beyond reception, into the dining room, with its perfunctory service, and on up the stairs. Disdain for or, at least, disinterest in the oh so tiresome customer is endemic. Its all so odd since the kitchen, the main draw for this place, clearly does give a hoot. Beyond the kitchen though and they seem to believe that the chaos & attitude somehow transmutes into Cool or idiosyncracy or something. Idiosyncratic it may be, but its as annoying as hell. Disappointing, given what it could be but, then again, your stars may be aligned.just right come the day. Almost worth a go - good luck.
