“Decent place, good value”
Reviewed April 2, 2013 via mobile

Stayed over the Easter weekend with my best friend.
Pros are the location and the value for money. It's on Main st, Halls Gap and easy walking distance to all the stores in town.

Was good to have breakfast and dinner included in the rate, however the limited serving times can be a little restrictive.

It seemed like there weren't that many staff at all and this was the cause of some issues on the first night of dinner, the only complaint I have of the place.

The room is spacious enough and the heater works well. We had twin beds, which are REALLY narrow and my friend fell off a few times during the course of our stay.

As mentioned earlier, my biggest complaint is about dinner on the first night. We arrived at 7 and left our order. We weren't served for an hour and during that time saw no less than 4 other dishes being returned to the kitchen. When our mains finally arrived the steak was scorched beyond edible and the vegetables were covered in some awful cheese sauce. We couldn't eat the dish but didn't bother sending it back to avoid a long wait again. Then another half hour for dessert and my sticky date pudding came out still frozen stiff.
Apparently they were short staffed for the evening, which resulted in that drama but having said that, they redeemed themselves the next evening.

Other things to note foodwise are the cooked breakfast option only consists if poached egg and bacon. Otherwise you can choose a continental breakfast.

Overall a good stay and decent place.

We really enjoyed the quiet relaxed atmosphere, the Jazz music was great and most of all the service. Very friendly and great to chat with. Our friend visiting from the US thoroughly enjoyed his stay, especially watching all (30+) kangaroos hopping by. The rooms were nicely decorated and up to date. The location also made it convenient to walk to the shops - nice not to have to drive everywhere. Look forward to going back.

We had no booking n and we were late around 6pm, we were so relieve they still have plenty of rooms. Very good value on money, wooden heritage building, 3 communal living rooms with large screen TV. The courtyard is great with a romantic live jazz music in balmy night. Food from the cafe/restaurant downstairs is superb compare to what you normally get in regional towns. Room was small but linens and bed are comfy. It definitely has a tasteful charm in a down to earth way.

Room Tip: We had a bathroom inside, room is facing the back away from the (quiet) street so it's even quie...

This booking was a last minute one for three days in between Xmas and New Year. We decided to go a bit more up market than a motel and as pretty much everything else was booked out or overly expensive we thought this sounded good value. Our booking included breakfast and 3 course dinner each day. Its always a bit apprehensive when you see the photos online and wonder how much they have been photoshopped, but we were fairly happy with the Hotel. It has been refurbished. The bedrooms were fairly small but then we figure you are there just to sleep so you don't want a massive room. Clean and comfortable, A/C fairly noisy as they tend to be once they have been used a few times.
We sat outside in the garden to have a drink before dinner on the first night. Went inside to order and it was not the most organised system - one person taking the order (handwriting them), getting drinks and sort of reception desk.
Our meals didn't take too long to arrive and were typical pub meals. I got salad instead of vegetables with my meal. Small wine list so we had a local red - Fratin Bros Merlot.
Not too many guests had booked in so hotel was fairly quiet.
We had cooked breakfast next morning (choice of that or cereals/fruit/toast). As we spent the day out we didn't get home until 6.30pm. Quite a few more people for dinner - some staying in other places. This time dinner was a total debacle. It was taking around 10mins for each person's order to be taken/drinks made. They had another young fellow helping out but he didn't really know what he was doing or what to do. It was a good half hour before we ordered. After about an hour our meal still hadn't arrived and they were obviously a bit behind as they were apologising to people. After an hour and a half I went up to ask where our meals were. He had forgotten to take the docket to the kitchen... 10mins he said. 40 mins later we finally got them. In the meantime one of the other guests had ordered the trout and told there wasn't any left. She picked another item off the menu. Halfway through eating her meal they brought out the trout but realised it was for someone else. She got rather upset.
My meal came out without the vegetables - half a dozen prawns on a bed of rice enough to feed an entire Vietnamese family. I asked for the vegetables and was brought out some soggy pieces which had probably been zapped in microwave. As it was nearly 9.30 by this time we didn't bother with the dessert (Not that they had what we wanted) or coffee.
There were guests in the room next door that continued on 'partying" until 3am when my partner got up and told them to be quiet. Although this is not the fault of the proprietors but it seems to be consistent with most hotels you stay at - there is no "Consideration for others" by holidayers who seem to delight in making as much noise as they can and walls so thin you can hear everything.
What started out as a reasonable trip turned into a disappointing debacle but then it does make for a memorable holiday.

Room Tip: Different pricing for different rooms - we were thinking of upgrading but I don't think the extr...

Look up quirky in the dictionary and you could well find a picture of the Mountain Grand Guesthouse. The fact that it's a guesthouse immediately invites comparison to Fawlty Towers, but it's a pretty apt one. Owner Don and his manager Tony have their own peculiar and very rigid way of doing things, and heaven help you if you ask for something even a little different. Staff turnover seems to be high and that has a negative effect on the quality of service. Don appears to be a mostly genial diva, taking the stage both nights of our stay to ply his interesting musical stylings to guests and visitors. The place itself is borderline decrepit, although our tiny, cramped room was clean and well presented. No TV in the room, you have to use one of the communal lounges. Meals - breakfast and dinner were included in our package - are a highlight, although a few elements of the meals let the effort down. The secret to enjoying the Mountain Grand is to temper your expectations significantly and make sure you don't pay top dollar for what is no better than a three-star establishment.
