Loved the natural aspect of the zoo...so not overcommercialized like most. A lovely walk. Friendly although somewhat persistent Deer. One on one meerkat time and chameleon time was awesome.

We went in hope the rain would hold off long enough to see the zoo... and it did. We were one of two groups there - and by group I mean there was two of us, and a small family as the other. It was great! No noisy crowds, and we got to really enjoy the atmosphere!
There was meerkats, deer, kangaroos, peacocks, giraffes, camels, crocodiles, red pandas, cassowarry... the list goes on! My only regret was that the lady at the front desk simply handed us a map and sent us on our way... if I knew more about the adorable meerkat encounter available I would have done it! Oh well... an excuse to go back. Just try and go "off peak" because its an amazing place to be without the crowds.

we went as soon as it opened due to the heat. god choice given the temp outside. spent a good 2 hours wandering around. also was very quiet then. really good hands on place. you can pay extra for different animal ecounters. we did the meerkat encounter. but perhaps they should have warned me prior that meercats eat maggots. i thought the staff member was just putting food in my hand, but i looked down to see maggots wriggling around. lucky i'm not too screamish really!

Long John Silver, glad you enjoyed your time with us though we are a little baffled about it being hot in June?! That aside let me alleviate your concerns about the maggots, they are actually mealworms (larval form of the mealworm beetle and not remotely related to a maggot which, as you know is the larva of a fly). Mealworms are one of the meerkat's favourite foods :) as I'm sure you soon discovered during your close encounter.
