“Slightly upmarket, ski-in and out of Falls Creek”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 21, 2012

The Astra is a well appointed, slightly high-end lodge on Falls Creek Mountain. The staff there made all the difference as they were lovely, friendly and they care about the snow conditions! The double-bedroom was suited for my son (10) and myself, the drying room and room for skis was logically placed and certainly big enough for gear, the jacuzzi and sauna were lovely after a full day on the slopes (though they could stay open a bit later than 7P). The restaurant was definitely more upmarket, no kids menu, which was fine for 1 night, the rest of the time we ate at the Man Hotel which was more like a pub and better for my son. The breakfast was included in our package and was a good selection, though the brewed coffee was an extra charge which seems a bit much. All in I would recommend if you want to splurge a bit and the staff are great.

Room Tip: Lower floors means less walking up after a day on the slopes (no lift)

The service it's outstanding for Australian standards. Everyone were very professional, friendly and helpful. The drinks at the bar were great, the food was amazing. Hitting the hot spa after a day on the mountain was bliss, then chilling at the lounge by the fireplace ahhh. Love it!

Stayed at Astra with 5 other couples in early August. Had the Penthouse Deluxe which accommodated all of us more than comfortably, beautiful view, great self-contained kitchen and well-appointed rooms and ensuites. Pool and spa area well-maintained, really appreciated it after a hard day on the slopes! Grochowski family (owners) looked after us really well, including shouting us a round of vodkas during my birthday dinner in the Astra restaurant on the first night! Food was amazing, it was no problem for the Chef to create a complete gluten-free birthday meal for me, even though I only expected one or two dishes I could eat! - the food just kept coming. Breakfast staff weren't always so cheery, but maybe that's because it was early morning?? But otherwise we had no complaints, would stay at Astra again - felt like a home away from home. Thank you Wally!

Room Tip: Penthouse Deluxe a good choice for large group of friends. Great view and self-contained.

We spent there nights at the Astra during the ski season. It is very modern, has great facilities and the staff are very friendly. It is well situated in the village and you can ski in and ski out. We will stay there again!

We had a really nice stay. Having stayed at the Lodge previously we did immediately notice that things were generally looking a bit tired and in need of some cosmetic rejuvenation. Despite this the staff were very friendly and offer fantastic service. All the services at the Lodge were in good working order (ie pool and spa) and general cleanliness was also excellent. Breakfast was very good with the chef happy to cook eggs to order.

Small gripes were the very small LCD TV in our room with a remote that needed very specific handling to change volume and channels, the lounge dining area of the Lodge was a little on the chilly side in the mornings, rear access to the drying room was not maintained so access was via the many front steps, precariously through the front glass doors and then through the 'lobby'. It was certainly much more convenient on our previous visit when you could ski to Milch and then walk down the steps straight into the drying room below. Complimentary brewed coffee at breakfast would be nice rather than the self service instant variety. I should mention that the staff were happy to offer one from the Expresso machine but this was an extra charge. WIFI, and tea/coffe making facilities and wine glasses would also be great in the rooms.

We would probably stay again considering the warm and friendly staff but would like to see some improvements considering the considerable price during peak season.

No longer a tapas bar, Astra is now an excellent restaurant coupled with a well stocked cocktail bar. The food is of a very high quality - a standout for me on a recent visit was a melt in the mouth confit lamb - but be prepared for snowline prices. You won't see much change out of $40 for a main. The service was excellent and the room is very welcoming with a large open fire, couches and an all too inviting bar. The wine list was brief but good and offered some good options at reasonable prices.

After your meal, it is very easy to migrate to a couch by the fire and begin a close examination of the cocktail menu or sample some of the large array of vodkas in stock.

Highly recommended for dinner, or just stop in for an apres ski drink and enjoy the warm, inviting atmosphere.

Just back from another great visit to Falls Creek and we had a sensational time here at Astra. The restaurant is the pick of the mountain, friendly helpful staff, wonderful lounging area with a big open fire and its in the heart of the Village. What more can we say. Our favorite spot on the mountain and we shall be back soon!

Room Tip: Best to book sooner than latter as it is July and August is the BEST MONTH!
