We stayed for 4 nights in January in a Mountain View room. Since they had a stay 2 nights get 1 free deal, I figured I'd just use up the budget! The room was nice - simple and with a stunning view. The Aesop products in the bathroom were my favorite part! The staff were friendly and overall a nice relaxing stay. Don't come expecting bells and whistles of a 5 star hotel - for $200 a night, this is a simple, but slightly fancier than most, quiet getaway. The quality of the cleaning of the bathroom was the only question mark for me - I'm quite particular about not really wanting to see someone else's hair in my bathroom, especially on the 3rd day I've been there.

Food was delicious. Although I expected us to get bored and start driving to other places, we ended up eating there all 4 nights. We went to the Bistro on the first night, the pub the second night, Restaurant Degustation the third and back to the pub the last night. All meals come from the same kitchen and you can get the same desserts in the pub as you can in the Bistro. The degustation was excellent and delicious - I just wished they would have given a little more description of the meals as they presented them, rather than just the dish and what it was. Most other degustations tend to be presented with information on where the ingredients come from, the inspiration behind the dish etc. I thought this would have added much more to the experience.

The continental breakfasts in the morning had some great fruit salads, big fluffy croissants...
The hotel is a quick drive to Mt Difficult etc for some nice walks or just over an hour to Halls Gap. We spent our days walking in the mornings then heading back and relaxing and reading by the pool or in the room. We also did a day drive around the area to some of the small towns (Hamilton etc)

Overall nice stay - would recommend

Quite nice modern rooms and quite good value . However, eating in the Bistro was a big letbdown. An overstretched kitchen took 75 minutes to get us a main course. Food overpriced compared to restaurants serving similar fare. Canteen like atmosphere. In towns like Beechwoodvwere we had been earlier in week this place would be deserted.

We stopped at the Royal Mail on our way to South Australia.
We had a a garden room, right next to the main road, quite noisy. Accommodation is no better than any average roadside motel, roomy and clean but extremely bland and basic, paper thin walls, no double-glazed windows. The package included breakfast but we had too leave before 8am on a Saturday morning, and we really had to insist a lot at reception to get some milk and cereal brought to our room the night before...
We usually trust the Age Good Food Guide and our expectations for the restaurant were quite high. We were not expecting a sophisticated place but at least some kind of charm and atmosphere. Alas, there again no effort whatsoever to create some ambience, and a very dull and tasteless dining room. A bit of decoration skills are badly needed there!!!
Food was good and service quite professionnal. The wine list is absolutely stunning.
Nothing dreadful by all means, but really you get better value for money in most places I have seen in Australia so far.

We had high expectations of both the restaurant and hotel and were disappointed with both.
The food was rather bland , the accommodation appeared dated, bereft of decoration except for the cobwebs in the stairwell. The double bed was not appreciated, nor the "doof doof" music from the adjacent wedding reception, and the TV reception was appalling .
All in all a disappointing experience.

While this hotel and restaurant complex owned by a Melbourne barrister may receive a lot of good press in Melbourne, my overriding memory is not the accommodation, but the noise on the timber floor of the hotel restaurant from a female waitresses' shoes, going 'clump, clump' all night.

A lady at an adjoining table asked the waitress whether she was paid by the kilometre rather than the hour. While the waitress did not get the joke, there was far too much walking by teh staff with the service for the 35 or so diners being overly and annoyingly intrusive.

While accommodation was acceptable, the atmosphere in the hotel's public bar (where meals are also served) is far more pleasant than in the noisy restaurant with its (unjustifiably) snotty staff.

We stayed overnight in a Garden view room- very quiet, spacious and clean. These rooms are across the road from the hotel and set back from the street. We did a couple of shorter walks in the afternoon and went for a drive into the Grampians a little way. We had the degustation in the restaurant for dinner and it was wonderful (the restaurant just won the Gourmet Traveller award for 2010 for best in Regional Australia). 10 small plates- 7 savoury, 3 sweet. All very different and varied- fish, oysters, eel, lamb, beef, jerusalem artichokes..... The meal at $150 per person ($110 for vegetarian) is not cheap but worth it for the experience and the service was fantastic. Allow 3-3.5 hours for dinner, as it is an experience to savour and not to be rushed. Thoroughly enjoyed our weekend and would go back for a big occasion. Note there is a pool but it is outdoors and not heated- not a winter option...
