Owner description: PUFFING BILLY OPERATES DAILY EXCEPT CHRISTMAS DAY. Puffing Billy is Australia’s favorite steam train and one of the finest preserved steam railways in the world. This century-old steam train continues to run on its original mountain track from Belgrave to Gembrook in the magnificent Dandenong Ranges 40kms east of Melbourne. Puffing Billy was built to serve at the turn of the century and is a genuine relic of our more leisurely days. The Railway is the major survivor of four experimental lines used to develop rural areas in the early 1900s. Puffing Billy Railway is now a major tourist attraction and operates every day except Christmas Day, thanks to the tireless efforts of more than 900 dedicated volunteers.

A$ 44,00 roundtrip Belgrave to Lakeside was vastly overpriced. The trip itself was boring with thousands of toddlers crying and screaming. I concluded that this trip was made for them. I think if you have kids and maybe are living in Melbourne this could be a nice trip for those who like picnics. The train travels 5 to 15 miles/hour with a 15 minutes stop in half way. So it takes 1 hour to travel 17 Km. There aren't stunning landscapes... Just a train, kids, pines and that's it. Therefore, young adults should be aware that Lakeside is a ordinary picnic site and if you really want to know this site, just pick a car and drive to there (the roads are side by side to rails) - you will save money.

Dear RodrigoGO,

Thank you for your review. We appreciate your feedback and are sorry that you didn’t enjoy your experience aboard the train.

Puffing Billy is a century old steam train, and our heritage locomotives and carriages are in use to this day. Our maximum speed is indeed 15 mph, which means that it is a relaxing way of experiencing the lush forests and fern gullies the train travels through.

We are a not for profit organisation. The Puffing Billy fares go towards the maintenance and restoration of our heritage railway, which is done in line with our Era of Significance (1900-1930s). On average, 37% per cent of the fare paid goes to train maintenance and operations, 25% to tracks and land maintenance, 6% to the purchase of coal (the majority of our steam locomotives run on coal), 22% to administration and 10% to marketing.

Puffing Billy is very popular day out for families. There are always many kids aboard who scream with glee as the train departs and makes its way through the hills! However, we find that this experience also appeals to other people, including young adults, international tourists and train enthusiasts. Patrons who want a different kind of Puffing Billy experience often choose the first class dining experiences on offer, which cater more to couples, anniversaries and the like.

Kind regards from the Puffing Billy team

This is a little railroad that runs for about an hour through the eucalyptus forests. It was a great day out. At the end of the route is a little park with a lake and a small refreshment stand. Prices were very reasonable and even though we were both adults, it made us feel like kids again.

This trip is a great family day out. We did the trip from Belgrave to Lakeside 1hr each way. Make sure that you pack a picnic lunch or they do have BBQ facilities at lakeside. There is a kiosk there if you come along empty handed or just want to grab a coffee or ice cream. You can hire paddleboats at the lake or checkout the model railway. Is beautiful countryside so even just going for a walk around the lake or park is enjoyable to. Make sure you know what time the train goes back and at peak times get there early for a seat, or you may have to stand or wait for the next train. (Thats if you dont leave it to the last train back) Overall a memorable trip for a family or even a couples romantic day out!

The train journey is popular for kids. It features lots of countryside views nearby. We stopped at lakeside stop with lots of kids doing aqua bike and people doing picnics. One tip is that be aware of the time scedule since there are a lot people and train runs not that frequently. And avoid the first few carriages since you will meet lots of coal blocks when you sit there.
