We had spent the day with our family - six little grandchildren including three under three - and their parents - on Puffing Billy after a drive from Geelong on a cold Winter morning.
Everyone had a wonderful day and, by the end of the day, everyone was tired and hungry.
So - what did we do? Did we go all the way home - something of an anti-climax for everyone? Or did we stop somewhere - children and all - for dinner?
Stop we did - just round the corner from Belgrave Station - at the Bell Tavern on the main street through Belgrave.
You walk into a place like that with the little crowd we had with some feelings of apprehension.
Not a bit of it! We were all made very welcome: there was a children's room just off the main bar where the staff were very happy to play videos for the children - and the fact that there were a few stairs leading up to it gave the children something unexpected to play on.
It turned out that the Tavern had only very very recently changed hands. Whether or not that was a reason for our welcome, we will never know, but the new staff certainly made us very welcome.
What we do know is that we were very well cared and catered for. All of our children were given dinners which they ate and enjoyed. Our meals were excellent - very good and substantial pub dinners. The service was warm and friendly and very welcoming - and, very importantly with little ones, quick!
My daughter asked for ice cream for the children after we had actually paid the bill. That was given to them very promptly, and the Tavern refused payment. How very lovely of them!
There was a band about to play as we left - we would have loved to have stayed.......
