I wouldn't call this a tour, I'd call it an experience.
Situated in the grounds and buildings of the old Mayday Hills Lunatic Asylum, this tour is enough to scare the pants off anyone. You don't need to have a supernatural experience to be spooked as the buildings alone have a creepy feeling.

Whilst intentionally theatrical, the guide had a great knowledge of the history of both the buildings and the patients that where incarcerated here. There are stories that will make you cry, make you laugh and if your tour guide is as sneaky as ours was, you will also scream.

If not coming away a believer in the afterlife, you will at least come away touched by the stories of the atrocities endured that have paved the way for our current mental health system.

First, walking tour of town with gold field policeman. He was so knowledgeable and acted his part well. He was quite loony and had us laughing several times. Would happily take tour again.
Second was a night tour of the Lunatic Asylum. Interesting place with an amazing history. My only issue was that the guide was more focused on tourists experiences with ghosts that history. Funny that after 6 or 7 ghost tours all over Vic, every tour seems to have supernatural experiences except the one i am on. Was still a great tour which I highly recommend.

We went on this tour tonight, I knew a staff member who worked in this place for a considerable length of time who had some good stories about the place, an old mental asylum.

I was personally very disappointed in this tour, the guide was very theatrical and very up close and personal on many occasions invading your personal space. Although many of the stories told were later confirmed by locals they seemed like just stories during the tour, I guess this was because of the tone of the guide.

No time was given to the opportunity of actually seeing a ghost as the tour guide attracted too much attention and was banging on tables and shouting out loud himself.
The old buildings, staff and patients were given very little respect by the guide, this tour could have been thoughtful and respectful and we all could have gained much more appreciation for the time it was open and the people who suffered there and for the spirits left behind!

My prsonal opinion, I'm sure some others enjoyed it...

As locals we decided to try this tour out because we had heard lots of good things.

The scariest part was possibly driving through darkened clifftops in order to reach Beechworth at the right time (midnight) but that was an adventure in and of itself.

The tour begins outside the asylum and as you are led through the narrow doors into the abandoned building.

Most recently used as part of the nearby university, the building feels well on the way to condemnation by authorities. The stairwells creak, the windows shake and the ambience is....to die for...

The guide's stories range from amusing to heartbreaking and every crack and scratch in the buildings walls tells a story.

The tour continues outside and through many outbuildings. Some of them cannot be entered as they are not safe for human habitation, but the experimentation room and the male quarters are two areas that will leave you feeling sad and reflective, if not utterly terrified.

The guide we had was excellent (he was an older gent who has a strong bond with the building...which he will tell you all about).

If you are of a sensitive nature, this tour will perhaps be too much - but if you have a sense of fun and willingness to suspend your disbelief, they tour is tops.

I would go do it again, in a skipped heartbeat!!
